Abstract
During last few decades many countries all over the world are expanding and restructuring their power sectors, but one of the most basic requirements of a modern electric power system is its ability to satisfy the consumer load requirements. In other words today’s world needs a reliable power system. We need a system that maintains continuity of supply irrespective of adverse conditions like shortage of power or disturbances. The system reliability depends on two factors stability and redundancy. For power shortage various reserves are employed which makes system redundant but for maintaining power system stability and ensuring efficient operation of power system, compensation is done. One of the aspects of compensation is to maintain line voltage within safe limits. In order to maintain line voltage within safe limits, VAR compensation is done. The literature clearly dictates that voltage is directly proportional to reactive power, i.e., if reactive power of line increases then the line voltage also increases and vice-versa. VAR compensation not only controls line voltage but also improves system stability. For this, many devices are used like STATCOM, SVCs etc. Though SVCs are cheaper and simpler yet STATCOM is better, as it has superior V/I characteristics, faster transient response, greater bandwidth, capable of exchanging both real and reactive power etc. Hence, for improving system stability, line compensation is done using STATCOM. But the operation of STATCOM must be uninterrupted and for this fast fault detection and its mitigation must be done. This thesis deals with the development of a simple and efficient method of fault detection and mitigation in multilevel converter STATCOMs. The STATCOM employs a multilevel converter in order to reduce harmonics along with a DC source. This system will detect fault in multilevel converter and bypass the faulty module with a healthy module to maintain efficiency and operation of STATCOM. The system is modeled using MATLAB/ Simulink. MATLAB simulations verify the system and its operation.
