Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Path analysis in ajwain [Trachyspermum
ammi L.]” was carried out with 25 genotypes including 3 checks. The genotypes were
planted in Randomized Block Design with three replications during late kharif 2012 at
Instructional Farm, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Rajasthan College of
Agriculture, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur.
The observation were recorded on five randomly selected plants for ten
characters viz., days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of
primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, number of umbels
per plant, number of umbellets per umbel, seed yield per plant, harvest index and oil
content. The data so obtained were subjected to analysis of variance, estimation of
different variability parameters and path coefficient analysis.
Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes for
number of secondary branches per plant, number of umbels per plant, number of
umbelletes per umbel, harvest index, seed yield per plant and oil content suggesting
sufficient amount of variability in the experimental material under study. High GCV
coupled with high heritability and expected genetic advance of a character provides
good selection advantage. There is a substantial scope for improvement of oil content,
number of umbels per plant, seed yield per plant and harvest index. Selection for these
characters would be effective in selection of suitable genotype for ajwain improvement
programme.
Association study indicated that seed yield per plant was positively and
significantly correlated at genotypic level with number of umbelletes per umbel. This
association indicated that improvement in seed yield can be achieved by improving the above character. Path coefficient analysis revealed that number of umbelletes per
umbel, number of secondary branches per plant and number of umbels per plant was
the major components for seed yield per plant because these traits had maximum direct
and indirect effect towards seed yield.
On the basis of present study the genotype PA 7, PA 28, PA 41, PA 53, PA 66,
PA 141 and PA 168 were found to have considerably higher mean values for the traits
seed yield per plant and oil content and lower mean values for days to 50% flowering,
days to maturity and plant height. Hence, emphasis should be given to utilize these
genotypes in further breeding programme.
