Abstract
A heat exchanger was designed and developed for hot water generation having capacity of 180 litres per batch and installed at Department of Renewable Energy Sources, College of Technology and Engineering, Udaipur. The performance evaluation of the system was done and techno-economic was evaluated. The physical and chemical properties of the wood were determined in the laboratory. The average value of moisture content, volatile matter, ash content and fixed carbon was found to be 14.75, 77.56, 2.66 and 19.78 per cent respectively. The calorific value of the wood was calculated 3700 kcal kg-1 by bomb calorimeter method. The temperature measured in reactor zone, gas outlet, and flame temperature were in the range of 771-1113 0C, 194-296 0C and 312-532 0C respectively. The average air flow rate observed was 14.63 m3 h-1. The specific gasification rate, gasifier efficiency and combustion efficiency were found to be 117.64 kg h-1-m-2, 70.36 per cent and 55 per cent respectively. The temperature of hot water was measured upto 97.9 0C at 80 minute and the highest exhaust temperature was 113 0C. Heat utilization efficiency, log mean temperature difference, overall heat transfer coefficient and effectiveness was 90 per cent, 141.65 0C, 152.04 kcal m2 h-1 0C-1 and 0.86. The efficiency of heat exchanger was 25.65 per cent for single batch per day where as the efficiency of heat exchanger for I, II, III and IV batch was observed as 25.53, 34.05, 41.43 and 41.26% respectively. The economic study showed that the net present worth of investment for the system compared to electricity and light diesel oil were Rs. 301246.50 and Rs. 266038.20 respectively, whereas the benefit cost ratio was 1.92 and 1.81 respectively. The pay back period of the gasifier with heat exchanger was found 7.5 months when compared with electricity and 8.7 months when compared with light diesel oil
