University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru

University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore, a premier institution of agricultural education and research in the country, began as a small agricultural research farm in 1899 on 30 acres of land donated by Her Excellency Maharani Kempa Nanjammanni Vani Vilasa Sannidhiyavaru, the Regent of Mysore and appointed Dr. Lehmann, German Scientist to initiate research on soil crop response with a Laboratory in the Directorate of Agriculture. Later under the initiative of the Dewan of Mysore Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, the Mysore Agriculture Residential School was established in 1913 at Hebbal which offered Licentiate in Agriculture and later offered a diploma programme in agriculture during 1920. The School was upgraded to Agriculture Collegein 1946 which offered four year degree programs in Agriculture. The Government of Mysore headed by Sri. S. Nijalingappa, the then Chief Minister, established the University of Agricultural Sciences on the pattern of Land Grant College system of USA and the University of Agricultural Sciences Act No. 22 was passed in Legislative Assembly in 1963. Dr. Zakir Hussain, the Vice President of India inaugurated the University on 21st August 1964.

    Biochemical and histochemical analysis of black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) inoculated with mycorrhiza from different crop management systems

    The investigation was carried out to study the biochemical, histochemical analysis of Piper nigrum L. and Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench inoculated with mycorrhiza from different crop management systems. Black pepper and sorghum were inoculated with mycorrhiza from the organic soil, inorganic soil, natural soil, control and Glomus fasciculatum. There were three experiments in which the first experiment was on growth response of black pepper to the inoculation of mycorrhiza from different crop management systems. In second experiment black pepper and sorghum were inoculated with mycorrhiza from different crop management systems and in third experiment sorghum was inoculated with mycorrhiza from different crop management systems. Histochemical analysis of these crop plants were carried out to study the difference in the accumulation of the polysaccharides, proteins and nucleic acids in leaf tissues of control and mycorrhiza inoculated plants. Plants inoculated with Glomus fasciculatum showed highest rooting percentage, percent root colonization, phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen content. Plants inoculated with Glomus fasciculatum recorded increased biomass than control. A significant difference in the accumulation of polysaccharides, proteins and nucleic acid content was observed in leaf sample of the plant inoculated with Glomus fasciculatum.

    STUDIES ON BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES AND SEED QUALITY AS INFLUENCED BY OSMOCONDITIONING IN ONION (Allium cepa L.)

    The seeds of two cultivars of onion, viz., Arka Kalyan and Rampur Rose were subjected to acceralated ageing at 40°C and 100 per cent RH under laboratory conditions for 0 & 8 days to create two vigour levels viz., high (non-aged) and low vigour seeds. Then they were osmoprimed with PEG-6000 at -1.5 MPa & -1.0 MPa for 5 days and 7 days at 10°C in order to assess the ability of priming treatments in repair of deterioration sustained during ageing. In the present investigation, it was observed that the PEG priming had increased the seed quality parameters such as germination percentage, mean seedling dry weight, SVI and the biochemical parameters, viz., total soluble sugar, protein and lipid content; total dehydrogenase and β-amylase activities in the seeds; but decreased the EC, total soluble sugar and protein content in the seed leachate; MDA content in the onion seeds of both the cultivars namely, Rampur Rose and Arka Kalyan studied. Further, the SDS-PAGE banding pattern of soluble seed protein profiles showed more variation with respect to band number and intensity in Rampur Rose as compared to that of Arka Kalyan upon PEG priming. In overall, it can be concluded that the high vigour seeds of Rampur Rose showed better improvement with regard to seed and seedling vigour upon PEG treatment at -1.0 MPa for 7 days as compared to other treatments.
