Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

    Dill seed (Anethum sowa Roxb. ex Fleming) is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae with chromosome number 2n = 2x = 20. Apiaceae families have unique features such as they contain essential oils and umbels like inflorescences. Dill grows well in a light to medium-textured soil. The ideal pH of the soil is from 5.0 to 8.2. The present work was carried out with an aim to identify housekeeping genes in dill seed for RT-PCR and analyzed it through geNorm for best stable reference gene. The dill genotype selected for the study was Gujarat dill seed-3.

    Sandalwood (Santalum album L.) is the nature’s gift in the world that requires stringent method for the plant production to avoid scarcity in future. In a bid to conserve the remaining germplasm, blend of plant tissue culture and biotechnology provides a feasible, effective means of propagating members of this genus. The detailed understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying the success or failure of traditional propagation can be explored by application of expression study. Considering the importance of in vitro organogenesis, the present study was carried out at Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, AAU, Anand to standardize the protocol of sandalwood for direct organogenesis and indirect organogenesis coupled with qRT-PCR technique for identification of the genes expressed during direct organogenesis and indirect organogenesis events, validation and absolute gene expression profiling of these genes in organogenesis events.

    Experiments were conducted to screen and validate suitable male specific markers in the identification of sex in papaya (cv. Madhubindu). From the reported markers W11, T12, Napf and CPSM 90 showed detectable results in sex determination and was used for further experimentation with routinely used PCR method as well as loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). Using screened markers unknown samples were identified with 100% efficiency of the marker used in predicting the sex type.

    Molecular and Biochemical characterization of Rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes for salinity stress

    Abiotic stresses like salinity is a major problem in today's agriculture. Salt affected soils can be managed by reclamation. But due to less availability of good quality of water, low soil permeability and high cost of amendments, this approach is not feasible on a large scale. Saline agriculture technology is an alternative approach for effective utilization of salt affected soils, which involves the cultivation of salt tolerant species/crop cultivars. Defining salt tolerance, however, is quite difficult because of the complex nature of salt stress and the wide range of plant responses. Hence, the traits associated with salt tolerance needs to be studied.
