EVALUATION OF NUTRITIVE VALUE OF RAGI AND SORGHUM REPLACING YELLOW MAIZE VIS-À-VIS IN PRESENCE OF SOYOIL, FISH OIL AND ENZYME IN BROILER DIETS
(KARNATAKA VETERINARY, ANIMAL AND FISHERIES SCIENCES UNIVERSITY, BIDAR, 2008-03) Venkata Reddy, K.; K.S. PRATAP KUMAR; B.S. VENKATARAMI REDDY; B. UMAKANTHA); V. MANJUNATH; M.L. SATYANARAYANA
Poultry in India, which was predominantly a backyard activity before 1960s has reached an industry status as well as an agri-business enterprise. India ranks third place in egg production and fifth place in broiler production in the world (Watt Executive Guide, 2006). At present, Indian meat production is 2.2 million tons and contributing about 260 billion (2%) to the GDP, providing both direct and indirect employment. Since the early 1990s, poultry meat has been the fastest growing sector in animal production and consumption in India. While demand has slowed for other meats, including fish, the poultry meat has accelerated and continues to lead the expansion of meat trade. Poultry meat is the cheapest animal protein providing food and nutrition security to both urban and rural population. During the past decade, egg production increased to over 45,200 million and the per capita availability of eggs has increased to 41 eggs. Broiler meat production increased to 2.2 million tons and the per capita availability of chicken meat increased to 1.73 kg. However, it is for below the recommended consumption of 180 eggs and 10.8 kg poultry meat per person per annum as by the Nutritional Advisory Committee. Over the years, poultry meat has found broad consumer acceptance, in part due to its low relative price and less fat compared to red meat. Without any social constraint the sector is growing at 12.64 per cent per year

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF VARIATION IN DIETARY PROFILE AND DURATION OF EARLY FEED RESTRICTION IN BROILERS
(KARNATAKA VETERINARY, ANIMAL AND FISHERIES SCIENCES UNIVERSITY, BIDAR, 2006-09) O.R. NATARAJU; K. S. Prathapkumar; B. Umakantha; H.N. Narasimhamurthy; B. S. Venkatarami Reddy
Poultry production in the country has gained momentum during the last four decades. Consequently, it has taken the shape of full-fledged industry. At present, this industry has emerged as the most dynamic and fastest expanding segment in Animal Husbandry sector with an annual growth rate of 6 per cent in 1980s, 11 per cent in 1990s and 19 per cent in 1997-2002 in broiler chickens and 5 per cent in egg production. With an annual production of around 43.67 billion eggs and 1440 thousand metric tones of broiler meat, India ranks 4th and 5th respectively, in the world (Mandal et al., 2005). Poultry sector in India contributes 100 billion rupees to the Gross National Product (GNP). The annual per capita availability of 1 kg meat in India is lower than 10.8 kg meat recommended by National Committee on Human Nutrition (Evans, 2002). Hence, the industry has potential to grow at about 10 times in meat sector. Broiler meat has a greater demand as compared to other meats, primarily because of the limitations and religious taboos in case of beef and pork. It also has the highest acceptability among all sections of consumers.

GENETIC EVALUATION OF TWO SYNTHETIC LINES
(KARNATAKA VETERINARY, ANIMAL AND FISHERIES SCIENCES UNIVERSITY, BIDAR, 2005-11) JOMON JOSEPH; K.S. PRATHAP KUMAR; H.N.NARASIMHA MURTHY
Poultry is one of the fastest growing industry and the demand for good quality meat and egg is ever increasing. Poultry meat is a well-balanced source of animal protein and has no religious taboos associated with its consumption unlike meat of other livestock; hence it’s gaining more and more importance in the human diet. Selection is the most important tool for achieving genetic improvement in poultry, when relative efficiency of different selection methods are compared multi trait selection is most effective when several interlinked, economically important traits are involved. Breeders are interested in increasing the meat yield of the broilers and improving the appearance of the carcass. Previously the body weight at 8‘h week of age was considered as important trait in broilers but now its consideration is switched to and 6^^ week’s body weight. The body conformation parameters such as keel and shank length, breast width, breast angle are good indicators of skeletal size and can be used as genetic parameters for broiler improvement. Introduction of growth traits in selection along with feed efficiency and conformation traits is expected to give better results than selection based on growth traits alone (Mishra et ah, 1986).

Study of Lipid Profile and Production Performance in Layers as Influenced by Herbal Preparations Abana^â ^ and Garlic paste
(Karnataka Veterinary Animal And Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, 2006) RAMESH, A
Poultry keeping in India about four and half decades ago was a backyard venture without systematic approach in management of birds for commercial egg and meat production. The total egg production in the country has increased from 2340 million eggs in the year 1961, to about 40,000 million eggs in the year 2004. Thus, in th four decades, a tremendous increase in egg production was achieved. India ranked 4 in egg production and 6* in broiler production in the world (Anonymous, 2005). In spite of such a tremendous potential for increased eggs production, the per capita availability of egg in rural and urban areas is 3 and 170 eggs, respectively with an average of 38 eggs as against to 180 eggs recommended by ICMR.

STUDY OF LIPID PROFILE AND GROWTH PERFORMANCE IN BROILERS AS INFLUENCED BY HERBAL PREPARATIONS ABANAâ ¢ AND GARLIC PASTE
(Karnataka Veterinary Animal And Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, 2006) M.P. PRAKASH
Poultry farming in India has achieved a tremendous growth in four and half decades from an age old backyard farming to most sophisticated agro based Industry using modern technology. Analysts estimate that the poultry sector in India has been growing at a much faster rate along with other industries such as British Poultry Organisation (BPO) and securities market. Over the past decade the poultry industry in India has contributed approximately Rs.10, 305 million to the Gross National Product (GNP).

STUDIES ON EFFECTS OF 2-a-BROMOERGOCRIPTINE (ANTI PROLACTIN AGENT) ON PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY OF COLOURED BROILER BREEDER DAMS
(Karnataka Veterinary Animal And Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, 2006) SRINIDHI.ICP
Large scale intensive poultry rearing was initiated in India four decades ago for commercial egg and meat production. Total egg production in the country increased from 2340 million eggs in the year 1961 to 40,000 million eggs in the year 2004. Thus, in four decades, a tremendous increase in egg production was achieved. In case of broiler breeders, the number of settable eggs per breeder dam was just 70 eggs in 1951 and has improved to 170 eggs (2.43 times) by 2000 AD (Poultry International, 2005). The number of chicks per breeder dam which was 47 in 1951 out of 70 eggs (67.14%) has improved to 150 chicks from 185 eggs (81.08%) by 2000 AD. Genetic selection was one of the important forces by which such an improvement in genetic composition was achieved to improve the production of hatching eggs as well as commercial egg production.

During the past six decades, Indian poultry industry has transformed from backyard activity into a modern, scientific and vibrant industry driven by technology. The poultry industry contributes approximately Rs.20, 000/- crore to the GNP and supports the livelihood of two million people (Desai, 2004).
