    Genetic Diversity for Oil Content and Fatty Acid Profiling In Cotton Genotypes Across the Species

    Cotton seed is one of the important by produvts of cotton, the use of which has not been exploited to the fullest extent. The seed collected after ginning is used for extraction of oil. The keeping quality of cotton seed oil is comparable to groundnut and safflower oil and its nutritional value is around 9 k cal/g. The average digestibility of cotton seed oil is is 97 per cent and could be compared with that of soybean, safflower and sunflower oils. The current work aims to study oil content, fatty acid profiling, ginning outturn, seed index and their correlation with oil content. The oil content in 123 cotton genotypes belonging to all four species was analyzed in Oxford 4000 NMR analyzer .Simultaneously; seed index and ginning out turn were estimated in these genotypes and were correlated with oil content. Fatty acid profiling og eight genotypes including all four species of cotton was carried out. The seeds were dehulled and kernel crushed to get fine powder and from this the oil was extracted with hexane in Soxhlet apparatus. Extracted oilwas methyl esterified and qualitative and quantitative analysis of oil was carriedout in Shimadzu Chromatopac GC-MS QP2010S.The major chemical components present in oil samples were palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. Among the eight genotypes BCS-23-18-7(G. barbadense) had the highest amount of oleic acid (24.36%). Here the activity of oleate 12 desaturase enzyme may be less and hence the oleic and stearic acid have accumulated and simultaneously linoleic acid has drastically decrased to 44.07 percent.

    Provenance Variation in Growth, Seed Morphometric Traits, Biochemical Characterization of Seed Oil of Calophyllum Inophyllum Grown in Uttar Kannada District

    Provenance influence on growth, productivity, seed quality, oil content, fatty acid profile, seed cake quality and biodiesel production of Calophyllum inophyllum were conducted in Uttara Kannada district (Agro-climatic Zone-10) of Karnataka during 2014-2015. The study was undertaken in the already existing trees in natural forest at five different locations with varying altitudes (2.7-26.6 m) and rainfall (3209-4145 mm). There was a significant effect of locations on tree growth, productivity and soil chemical properties. Seed parameters were significantly influenced by different locations. Seed oil yield varied from 36.07 to 48.87 per cent and was greenish yellow in colour with disagreeable odour. Four to six fatty acid components were detected in the oil samples of C. inophyllum by GC-MS analysis of which four fatty acids are the major components viz., Palmitic acid ranges from 17.24-23.39 per cent, Stearic acid ranges from 9.88-15.90 per cent, Oleic acid ranges from 24.87-62.73 per cent and Linoleic acid ranges from 21.46-57.23 per cent. Two stage transesterification of C. inophyllum oil yielded biodiesel with 67.07 per cent. Biodiesel having Kinematic viscosity of 1.638 cSt (at 40 °C), Density as 889 (kg/m3 at 30 °C), Acid value of 0.14 (mg KOH/g), Specific gravity of 0.889 (at 30 °C), Saponification value as 147.56, Iodine value of 90.12, flash point of 140 ºC and cetane value of 59.35. The biodiesel parameters fit into the ASTM D6751 standards. Macro nutrients and proximate composition of de-oiled cake differed significantly with respect to locations and sites. C. inophyllum has the potential to capture medicinal and biofuel sector, due to its high oil content and oil quality and biodiesel production potential.

    PROVENANCE EFFECT ON MORPHO-CHEMICAL, MORPHO-GENETIC CHARACTERIZATION OF OIL OF Hydnocarpus pentandra

    Provenance influence on growth, productivity, seed quality, fatty acid profile, seed cake quality and biodiesel production of Hydnocarpus pentandra were evaluated in Uttara Kannada district (Agro-climatic Zone-9) of Karnataka during 2013-2014. Experiments are undertaken in the already existing trees in natural forests at four different locations with varying altitudes (400-550 m) and rainfall (2000-3200 mm). There was a significant effect of site conditions on various growth and productivity parameters. The soil under H. pentandra exhibited better physical and chemical properties as compared to their respective control sites. The fruit, seed and kernel parameters were significantly influenced by different locations and fruit sizes. Kernel fraction was significantly influenced by fruit sizes. Seed oil yield varied from 30.61 to 60.13 per cent and was golden yellow in colour having agreeable smell. The GC-MS chromatogram of the oil indicated the presence of 8 to 10 compounds, of which 4 to 5 were identified as the major compounds viz. palmitic acid (2.26-4.20%), stearic acid (2.56-5.13%), chaulmoogric acid (24.57-57.07%), hydnocarpic acid (5.85-7.94%) and gorlic acid (12.02-30.17%). The methyl esters (biodiesel) having kinematic viscosity (4.104 cSt), density (827 kg/m3), acidity (0.36 mg KOH/g), specific gravity (0.827), saponification value (284), flash point (165ºC), fire point (174ºC) and cetane number (63.93) with 82-85 per cent yield was obtained under the optimal condition. The biodiesel parameters fit into the ASTM standards. Macro, micro nutrients and proximate composition of de-oiled cake differed significantly with respect to location and fruit sizes. H. pentandra has the potential to capture medicinal and biofuel sector, due to its high oil content, oil quality and biodiesel production potential.
