    Indian economy was not the globalized till 1992; due to recession, the government has to make strategic changes in economic policy during this time. This new economic reforms came into action which leads to globalization and made the Indian market open for world. Reforms raised the competition for even survival of the domestic cooperative dairies. Government realized the need to support the cooperative dairies and decided to protect the cooperative dairies by introducing the Milk Shade Area but it was introduced to groom the domestic cooperatives until it becomes mature to a level where it can face the global competition. When this cooperative sustained for almost a decade, government found them sustainable and they decided to remove such barriers

    The bakery industry in India is the largest of food industry with an annual turnover of about ` 4,000 crore. Market for bread segment has increased with a growth rate of 6.0% during the period 2004-05 to 2009-10. The sector is predominated by the unorganised sub sector accounting for about 85 per cent. The per capita consumption of bread in the country is 2 kg per annum. The Product variation involves 85% of milk bread, 10% of brown bread, 3% of fruit bread, and 2% of nutritional and other speciality. Major players for bread production in the country are Britannia and Modern Industries Ltd.

    Dairy industry is of crucial importance to India. The country is world’s largest milk producer, accounting for more than 18% of world’s total milk production around 118 million MT. It is world’s largest consumer of dairy products, consuming almost 100% of its own milk production. Inventory management is very necessary for the firm because if the firm has lesser investment in inventory, this would lead to unavailability of materials when required which would ultimately lead to interruption in production process. Also, if the firm has higher investment in inventory this would lead to unnecessary locking up of funds in inventory, thus reducing the working capital.     The total geographical area of India is 328.7 million hectares of which 140.3 million hectares is net sown area, while 193.7 million hectares is the gross cropped area. The most important fruits grown in the country include Mango, Banana, Guava, Papaya and Sapota and Vegetables include Tomato, Brinjal, cauliflower, cabbage, and okra. The leading fruits and vegetable growing states in the country are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Gujarat, Karnataka, Bihar, Haryana and Punjab.
