The College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Anjora, Durg was established on 8th September, 1985 under the Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. After the formation of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur in January 20, 1987, it is included as one of the constituent colleges. This college becomes the only Veterinary College of the state when the present State of Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in the year 2000. This was followed by the announcement of the establishment of Chhattisgarh Kamdhenu Vishwavidyalaya (CGKV) by His Excellency the Governor of Chhattisgarh State dated 11th April, 2012. The livestock sector of the State of Chhattisgarh intends to build a dynamic livestock economy leading to improved employment, increased economy, food security and food self-sufficiency for its people. The Veterinary College under the umbrella of CGKV, is an autonomous, non-profit making educational and research organization dedicated for the upliftment of farmer’s livelihood in Chhattisgarh. Education, research and extension are the major activities of the college through grant in-aid received from State Government, Govt. of India, ICAR and other national and international agencies to fullfill need-based mandates and objectives which are :
To impart modern education in Veterinary & Animal Sciences.
To promote and strengthen research programmes in Veterinary and Animal Sciences for safeguarding the animal health and improve livestock productivity.
To undertake effective transfer of technology to pass on the benefits of research to the line departments , farmers and entrepreneurs for adoption through extension education.
The college has highly competent and experienced faculty members who have made significant contributions in research on animal health and production and various accolades of merit. The college has implemented minimum Standards of Veterinary Education Degree Course (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) Regulations, 1993 of Veterinary Council of India and accordingly, external examination system is in vogue for B.V.Sc. & A.H. 5-year programme. The college is recognized by the Veterinary Council of India and has obtained accreditation from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

The whole experiment was divided in gross and histomorphological studies. For histomorphological studies the organs were classified on the basis of size of the largest follicle on surface of one of the ovaries as in group A up to 4 mm, group B 4-6 mm and group C more than 6 mm. The average length, width, thickness and weight of right and left ovaries were 1.49 ± 0.04 cm, 0.93 ± 0.05 cm, 0.29 ± 0.04 cm, 1.14 ± 0.12 gm and 1.45 ± 0.06 cm, 0.76 ± 0.06 cm, 0.16 ± 0.008 cm, 0.46 ± 0.084 gm, respectively. The average length of right and left fallopian tube was 12.2 ± 0.41 cm and 12.21 ± 0.53 cm respectively. The width of infundibulum, ampulla and isthmus of right and left fallopian tube were 0.24 ± 0.01 cm, 0.15 ± 0.006 cm, 0.23 ± 0.006 cm and 0.24 ± 0.08 cm, 0.18 ± 0.01cm, 0.23 ± 0.009 cm, respectively. The average length, width and thickness of right and left horn of uterus were 15.19 ± 0.73 cm, 1.25 ± 0.12 cm, 0.38 ± 0.02 cm and 15.15 ± 0.83 cm, 1.04 ± 0.08 cm, 0.40 ± 0.02 cm, respectively. There were four rows of caruncles in both of the uterine horns. The number of caruncles per row varied from 71 to 87. The size of caruncles as large in mid uterine horns. The average length, width and thickness of corpus uterus were 2.08 ± 0.18 cm, 1.37 ± 0.08 cm and 0.42 ± 0.05 cm, respectively. The average length width and thickness of cervix were 1.44 ± 0.06 cm, 1.24 ± 0.59 cm and 0.38 ± 0.07 cm, respectively. The average length of vagina was 6.56 ± 0.23 cm. Histomorphologically the ovary was covered by germinal epithelium which decreased in height from 8.34 ± 0.99 μm in group A ( Ovary with surface follicle of up to 4 mm diameter) to 5.22 ± 1.033 μm in group C (Ovary with surface follicle of more than 6 mm diameter). The shape changed from cuboidal to squamous type. The range diameter of the follicles was 96.00 - 691.00 μm, 720.00 – 1440.00 μm and 2400.00 – 4032.00 μm in group A, B and C respectively. The membrana granulosa and liquor folliculi gave intense positive response to PAS- Alcian blue. The fallopian tube had layer like tunica mucosa, tela submucosa, tunica muscularis and tunica serosa. The heights of the folds,height of epithelium and cilliation was more in all three regions i.e. infundibulum, ampulla and isthmus in specimen of group C. A variable activity from low to moderate was noticed for presence of mucosubstances in the epithelium and glands of the fallopian tube. The wall of uterus was consisted of endometrium, myometrium and perimetrium. The endometrium was lined by pseudostratified columnar epithelium. Pronounced secretory activity was noticed in the specimens of group C in all three regions of uterus. In the cervix intense positive PAS- Alcian blue activity was specially marked. The vagina showed longitudinal mucosal folds. The vaginal epithelium was stratified squamous non-keratinized in group A and C. The thickness of epithelium was highest in group C. TiwariThe experimental study was conducted on Murrah, Jersey, H.F., Gir and Sahiwal breeds of bulls recovering from gossypol poisoning. The objectives was to study seminal characteristics, post thaw semen evaluation and freezability of semen, and post thaw incubation periods on frozen semen of different breeds. A total of 100 semen ejaculates from 5 breeds of bulls (20 ejaculates from each of 5 breeds) were taken during the recovery period for study. Volume, colour, consistency and concentration were recorded. A sample of fresh semen was used for evaluation of live sperm count, sperm abnormalities, acrosomal integrity and in-vitro functional tests i.e. HOST and CMPT. Fresh semen was diluted initially and a drop from it was used for evaluation of individual motility. Seminal parameters recorded during the recovery period were compared with the data available in CSS for the period of poisoning and before poisoning. However, not much data for the period of poisoning was available as all the ejaculates were discarded at that time. The volume of semen differed significantly (P≤0.01) between the breeds and was significantly lower in Murrah buffaloes during the recovery period. The volume was significantly increased in H.F. (P≤0.01), Gir (P≤0.01) and Sahiwal (P≤0.01) during the period of poisoning as compared to before poisoning and during recovery period. The colour of the semen varied from creamy to watery and consistency from thick to translucent in all the breeds during the recovery period. Curdling of semen was a major problem reported during the period of poisoning in all the breeds with the consistency varying from thin creamy to watery The concentration of spermatozoa differed significantly (P≤0.05) between the breeds during recovery period. Sperm concentration in Sahiwal breed was significantly low (P≤0.05) during the poisoning period than before poisoning and during recovery period while there was no significant difference in other breeds. The average individual motility did not differ significantly between the breeds during recovery period while it was significantly reduced (P≤0.01) in all the breeds during poisoning period than before poisoning and during recovery period. The live sperm percentage was significantly higher in Murrah and Jersey breeds (P≤0.01) while significantly lower in Sahiwal breed during recovery period. There was no significant difference in the live sperm percentage between the before-poisoning phase and the recovery phase in Murrah, H.F. and Gir bulls whereas, in Jersey bulls it was significantly higher (P≤0.05) and in Sahiwal bulls, significantly lower (P≤0.01) during recovery period than before-poisoning phase. The average total sperm abnormalities were significantly higher (P≤0.01) in Jersey, H.F. and Sahiwal breeds while lower in Murrah breed semen during recovery period. The total abnormalities were significantly higher in Murrah (P≤0.05), H.F. (P≤0.01), Gir (P≤0.05) and Sahiwal (P≤0.05) breeds during the recovery period as compared to the before poisoning period. CMPT, Percent normal acrosome, and percent HOS positive sperm did not differ significantly between the breeds during the recovery period. After 24 hrs of cryopreservation the straws were evaluated for various seminal characteristics. The percent normal acrosome and percent total sperm abnormalities did not differ significantly between breeds during the recovery period. Post thaw motility in Murrah and Sahiwal breeds was significantly low (P≤0.05) as compared to that of Jersey, H.F. and Gir bulls; The percent HOS positive sperm in frozen semen was significantly higher in Murrah bull semen (P≤0.05) and lower in Gir and Sahiwal semen; and the cervical mucus penetration distance was significantly higher in Jersey breed (P≤0.01) and lower in Gir and Sahiwal breed during the recovery period. To observe freezability of semen during the recovery period, frozen semen straws prepared from above evaluated fresh semen were observed. Freezing resulted in significant decline in post thaw motility, acrosomal integrity, CMPT, and HOST. % total abnormalities were higher in frozen semen of Murrah (P≤0.01), H.F. (P≤0.05) and Gir (P≤0.01) than the fresh semen during recovery period while it did not differ significantly in Jersey and Sahiwal breeds. Effect of post thaw incubation durations was observed by evaluating, frozen semen straws immediately after thawing at 0 hr (control) and after 15, 30, 45 and 60 min of incubation at 37°C. The overall post thaw motility in all the breeds was significantly higher in 0 min (P≤0.01) and there was a significant reduction in the motility during 15 min, 30 min, 45 min and 60 min intervals during the recovery period. The overall post thaw HOS positive sperm % and the cervical mucus penetration distance in all the breeds was significantly lower in 0 min (P≤0.01) and there was a significant increment in the motility during 15 min, 30 min, 45 min and 60 min intervals. In the present study, seminal parameters of Murrah, Jersey, H.F., Gir and Sahiwal bulls have been characterized to some extent in a selected population. Sperm concentration was significantly higher and live spermatozoa % was significantly lower in Sahiwal breed as compared to other breeds during the recovery period. Ejaculate volume was significantly higher in H.F., Gir and Sahiwal breeds during the period of poisoning as compared to before poisoning and during recovery period. Sperm motility % was significantly reduced during the period of poisoning. Sperm abnormalities were higher during the period of recovery.ThesisItem Open Access ULTRASONOGRAPHIC STUDIES OF OVARIAN ACTIVITY IN POSTPARTUM ANESTROUS SAHIWAL COWS(Chhattisgarh Kamdhenu Vishwavidyalaya, Durg, 2016) KUMR PAIKRA, DILIP; Tiwari, R. P.Present investigation was carried out to study the “Ultrasonographic studies of ovarian activity in postpartum anestrous Sahiwal cows”. A total of 14 anestrous Sahiwal cows with normal parturition of more than 65 days after parturition were selected for present study from Bull Mother Experimental Farm (B.M.E.F.), College of Veterinary Sci. & A.H., Anjora, Durg. These animals were randomly divided into two groups. Animals (n=7) control group were given 2.0 ml normal saline intramuscularly and animals (n=7) treatment group were given injection GnRH @ 10 μgm intramuscularly on day 0. The animals in both groups were monitored at three days interval for 24 days, i.e. day 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 days using transrectal ultrasonography (5-7.5 MHz) for development of ovarian follicles. The blood samples were collected from all experimental animals on days 0, 11 and 22 to estimate concentrations of serum progesterone, serum macroelements calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and serum trace elements iron, copper, cobalt and zinc. The levels of macro elements and trace elements were compared among cyclic and acyclic animals of treatment and control groups. Significantly higher number of animals came in estrus (57.14% Vs. 28.57% (P < 0.05) in treatment than control group. significantly larger follicle were observed on day 3, 12 (P < 0.05) and 24 (P < 0.01) in treatment group than control group. The serum progesterone level was higher on day 0, 11 and 22 in treatment group. However the difference was statistically non-significant. The serum copper concentration was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in cyclic group.
