ArticleItem Open Access Effect of Calcium Ion Variations on the Action of Gallamine(TANUVAS, 1985) Hariharan, P; Natarajan, R; TANUVASThe study concluded that calcium ion facilitates contraction produced by acetylcholine in normal Ringer as well as in the presence of Gallamine. The results of this in vitro study may indicate that, after surgery intravenous administration of calcium may enable the animal to recover from the effects of Gallamine more quickly and thereby reduce the chances of risk of paralysis of respiratory muscles.ArticleItem Open Access A PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE EFEECTS, OF CROTALARIA JUNCEA ON REPRODUCTION(1981) Gopalan, S; Mathuram, LN; Natarajan, R; TANUVASThe effect of oral administration of powdered seeds of Cr.otalaria juncea on the reproductive perfarmance in m ice was studied. It was found that it did. not, affect male fertility but effectively prevented conception in treated female mice.ArticleItem Open Access Studies on Metamizole, Cyproheptadine and Phenobarbitone Sodium Interaction in Rats(TANUVAS, 1982) Kanniappan, M; Samuel, J.Jayasekaran; Natarajan, R; TANUVASThe above findings clearly indicate that analgesic effect of metamizole was reduced or nullified at the dose of 225 mg/kg body weight on simultaneous administration with cyproheptadine at the dose of 0.1 mg/kg body weight, and 72 hours after the administration of phenobarbitone sodium at the dose of 100 mg/kg body weight and cyproheptadine at the dose of 0.1 mg/kg body weight. Hence both in therapy and during surgery, the above drug interactions should be taken into consideration while administering metamizole as an analgesic.ArticleItem Open Access Studies on the Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Some Plant Preparations(TANUVAS, 1983) Cyrus, Inbaraj; Natarajan, R; TANUVASBoth Rumalaya and Vegecort were found to possess significant anti inflammatory activity. However, while the activity of Rumalaya was comparable to that of phenylbutazone, the activity of Vegecort was less than that of Rumalaya.ArticleItem Open Access STUDIES ON THE EFFECTS OF HYGROPHILLA SPINOSA. ANDROGRAPHIS PANNICULATA, LIV. 52, AND KINEL FORTE IN EXPER1MENTALLY INDUCED LIVER DAMAGE IN DOGS(1981) Sridharan, NV; Samanna, HC; Ramaswamy, VM; Natarajan, R; TANUVAS1. Studies on the effects of H. spinosa, A. Panniculata (herbs), bv. 52 an,d Kinel forte (drugs) in experimentally induced liver damage wIth carbon tetrachloride were carried out in 20 adult dogs wh!ch ~nc1uded 4 dogs as controls. The effects wer~ assessed by estImatIng SGPT/SGOTjSAP activity daily for 10 days. ]4 CHEIRON 2. 'THe groups treated with herbs/drugs showed .lo_w J~yels pf enzyme activity after damage when compared with the coiltrols.·' However individual group variations were nqticed; while the enzyme activity in A. pannicuIata, Liv, 52 and Kinel forte treated groups showed a faster downward trend, with H spinosa the trend was gradual. 3. It is concluded that all the herbs/drugs taken for study possessed necrotropic properties The efficiency of a single herb, A. panniculata in protecting the Ii er in experimental damage as in the present study was quite striking and was comparable to that of Liv. 52 and kinel forte which are proprietary preparations containing many indigenous plant principles. H. spinosa was least effective when compared with other~.ArticleItem Open Access STUDIES ON THE HYPOGLYCAEMIC EFFECTS OF STRYCHNOS POTATORUM AND ACACIA ARABICA ON ALLOXAN DIABETES IN RABBITS(1981) Mathuram, LN; Samanna, HC; Ramaswamy, VM; Natarajan, R; TANUVAS1. Effect of Strychnos potatroum, Acacia arabica and tolbutamide were studied in rabbits rendered diabetic by intravenous administration of alloxan at a dose rate of 120mg./Kg body weight. 2. On the seventh day after alloxan administration, Strychnos potatorum seed powder (0.5gm.jkg), Acacia arabica bark decoction (20 ml/Kg) and tolbutamide (Rastinon 0.25gm/Kg) were administered by stomach tube to diabetic rabbits fasted for 18 hours. Blood samples were collected at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours. 3. Strychnos potatorum, Acacia arabica and tolbutamide produced significant reduction in blood glucose level as compared to the control, maximum reduction being two hours after administration. In the first hour Strychnos potatorum produced a rise in blood sugar level and subsequently a fall below the initial level.ArticleItem Open Access STUDIES ON THE USE OF SYNTHETIC ATROPINE SUBSTITUTES IN ORGANO PHOSPHORUS PESTICIDE POISONING(1987) Jayasekaran Samuel, J; Mani, KBS; Cyrus, Inbaraj; Natarajan, R; TANUVASAt the anticholinergic dose, the atropine substitute propantheline had a protective action in asuntol poisoning.ArticleItem Open Access A study on the Antagonism of d-Amphetamine Induced Lethality by Tranquilizers(TANUVAS, 1983) Selvasubramanian, S; Natarajan, R; TANUVASThe relative efficacy of the three tranquilizers, chlorpromazine, triflupromazine and diazepam in antagonising amphetamine induced lethality was studied. The protective ED50 observed in regard to chlorpromazine, triflupromazine and diazepam were 0.54±0.11 mg/kg body weight 0.37±0.12 mg/kg body weight and 0.78±0.24 mg/kg body weight, respectively. The results indicate that triflupromazine is superior to chlorpromazine which in turn is superior to diazepam in antagonising the amphetamine induced lethality.
