Abstract
1. Studies on the effects of H. spinosa, A. Panniculata (herbs),
bv. 52 an,d Kinel forte (drugs) in experimentally induced liver
damage wIth carbon tetrachloride were carried out in 20 adult dogs
wh!ch ~nc1uded 4 dogs as controls. The effects wer~ assessed by
estImatIng SGPT/SGOTjSAP activity daily for 10 days.

2. 'THe groups treated with herbs/drugs showed .lo_w J~yels pf
enzyme activity after damage when compared with the coiltrols.ยท'
However individual group variations were nqticed; while the enzyme
activity in A. pannicuIata, Liv, 52 and Kinel forte treated groups
showed a faster downward trend, with H spinosa the trend was
gradual.
3. It is concluded that all the herbs/drugs taken for study
possessed necrotropic properties The efficiency of a single herb,
A. panniculata in protecting the Ii er in experimental damage as in
the present study was quite striking and was comparable to that of
Liv. 52 and kinel forte which are proprietary preparations containing
many indigenous plant principles. H. spinosa was least effective
when compared with other~.
