The crossbred backyard poultry strain Namakkal chicken-1 was introduced to improve the produc- tion performance and increase the income over traditional backyard poultry. A study was conducted among 50 farmers in Tamil Nadu to assess the constraints encountered by the farmers. It was conducted in Namakkal district belonging to Northwestern zone of Tamil Nadu. Data was collected from 325 livestock farmers through pretested interview schedule and participatory rural appraisal method. Gender participation and decision making were analysed using frequency distribution, percentile and chi-square test. Dam was collected from the sample size of 222 respondents using a well structured pretested interview schedule. The study revealed that most of the regular activities in sheep and goat keeping were performed by women while the occasional activities by men, although, Women participated to a certain extent.ArticleItem Open Access Gender dimensions in backyard poultry rearing(Peer Reviewed, 2017-08) Sakthivel, K.M.; Narmatha, N.; Uma, V.; Jothilakshmi, M.; TANUVASA study was taken up to examine the gender involvement of rural farmers in backyard poultry production and their decision making pattern. Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu was purposively selected for the study and the data were collected from 222 respondents by using multistage random sampling. The results reveal that most of the activities in backyard poultry were performed by women, while independent participation of men was around 10.0 per cent. Further, women’s participation in decision making was more than 50.0 per cent in all the activities of breeding and management. In health care also the decision making was more than 50.0 per cent except in vaccination and medication. Most of the health care activities were not followed by more than 40.0 per cent of the households. This indicates lack of awareness about the importance of health care practices among the households although the backyard poultry rearing is a traditional occupation in rural households.ArticleItem Open Access Indigenous Technical Knowledge of Tribes on Livestock Diseases in Kolli Hills of Tamil Nadu(2015) Uma, V.; Narmatha, N.; Sakthivel, KM; Jothilakshmi, M.; TANUVASIndigenous knowledge refers to the unique, traditional, local knowledge existing within and developed around the specific conditions of people indigenous to a particular geographic area. The use of indigenous knowledge has been considered as an alternative way of promoting development in poor rural communities in many parts of the world (Briggs, 2005). Eggshell colour is determined by genetics, but colour of earlobe and feather are slight indicators. Araucana an American breed lay light blue 7 light brown shelled eggs which differs from normal chicken eggshell colour.ArticleItem Open Access Opinion Of Farmers Regarding Functioning Of Krishi Vigyan Kendras(2016-03) Bashir, Bimal P.; Narmatha, N.; Sakthivel, K.M.; Uma, V.; Jothilakshmi, M.; TANUVASA study was conducted with the objective of eliciting the opinion of farmers regarding the functioning of Krishi Vigyan Kendras in Tamil Nadu and Kerala to strengthen its functioning. Data were collected from randomly selected 360 respondents from 60 villages under the work area of six university Krishi Wgyan Kendras and six NGO Krishi Wgyan Kendras of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The results indicated that majority of the farmers had favourable opinion towards the functioning of Krishi Vigyan Kendras. It also revealed that the opinion of the farmers was positively and significantly associated with their annual income, trainings attended, organisational participation, innovativeness and information seeking behaviour and it could be concluded that these variables were much important in predicting the opinion of farmers towards the functioning of Krishi Vigyan Kendras.Book chapterItem Open Access Public Private Partnership In Livestock Sector OverviewUma, V.; Narmatha, N.; Sakthivel, K.M.; Jothilakshmi, M.; TANUVASPublic Private Partnership is the new buzzword doing rounds in almost all sector of the economy. Multistage random sampling was adopted in this study. The study revealed that majority of the goat farmers were females, old age, illiterate, had joint families and living in tiled houses. Although agriculture and animal husbandry was their main occupation, most of them were landless and had medium flock size of goat.Book chapterItem Open Access Who Is Smallholder Farmer? Accelerating growth in agricultural sector remains a key policy concem in India despite a significant decline in its share in gross domestic product (GDP), from 48% in 1970/71 to 14.2% in 2010/11 [GOI, 2011).
