Effect of feeding rations supplemented with hydroponic maize fodder on nutrient utilization and milk production in lactating Graded Murrah Buffaloes

dc.description.abstractABSTRACT: A 120 day lactation trial was conducted using 12 lactating graded Murrah buffaloes (avg. b. wt. 602.53 ± 13.4 kg) by randomly allotting them into two groups of 6 animals each (control and treatment) to study the effect of replacing farm made concentrate mixture with hydroponic maize fodder at 25 % level on milk yield and composition and on nutrient digestibility. Further, in vitro and in sacco studies were conducted to evaluate the digestibility of hydroponic maize fodder. Chemical composition (% DMB) indicated CP and EE contents were higher in hydroponic maize fodder as compared to either conventional maize fodder or maize grain while the NFE content was higher compared to conventional maize fodder but lower when compared to the maize grain. Further, production of hydroponic maize fodder (on 7th day) from maize grain resulted in DM loss of 3.58 per cent. The in vitro DM (P>0.05), CP (P>0.05), NDF (P<0.05) and ADF (P<0.05) digestibilities (%) evaluated using strained rumen liquor of buffalo bulls were higher for hydroponic maize fodder as compared to the maize grain. The effective degradability (% ED) of DM, CP, NDF and ADF at a rumen outflow rate of 0.05/h were 57.30 and 61.63; 57.47 and 63.20; 42.67 and 34.90; 40.30 and 31.60 per cent for maize grain and hydroponic maize fodder, respectively. The daily average milk yield, butter fat yield, 6 % FCM, protein and casein increased (P>0.05) while butter fat, SNF, lactose and total solids per cent decreased (P>0.05) marginally in treatment group as compared to the control. The feed efficiency (DMI/kg 6% FCM yield) and cost of feed per kg 6% FCM yield of lactating buffaloes were 1.36 and 1.34 and 15.28 and 15.15 in control and treatment groups, respectively.The digestibility of DM, OM (P>0.05), CP, EE, CF, NFE, NDF, ADF, hemi-cellulose and cellulose (P<0.05) increased in buffaloes in the treatment group as compared to the control. The DM intakes (kg/day) were 19.37 and 19.42 for control and treatment groups, respectively. The DCP and TDN intakes expressed as % in the diet consumed or as Kg/d increased (P>0.05) in the treatment group of buffaloes as compared to the control. Further, the DM, DCP and ME intakes per kg W0.75 were similar among both the groups and were higher than the values recommended by ICAR (1998). Similarly, the DCP:ME ratio was comparable among the groups.Based on the present study, it is concluded that replacement of farm made concentrate mixture with hydroponic maize fodder at 25% level resulted in improved digestibility of gross nutrients (except DM and OM) and fibre fractions but had no effect (P>0.05) on milk yield and composition of lactating graded Murrah buffaloes.en_US
