T : In the present study, protective effect of orally administered betaine/optibetaine in caecal coccidiosis was evaluated in young broilers continuously fed with a standard diet (G-I) or standard diet with betaine (G-II), betaine+salinomycin (G-III), optibetaine (G-IV) (marketed by Optima Life Sciences, Coimbatore) and optibetaine+salinomycin (G-V) from hatch. The body weight gain, lesion scores, faecal oocyst shedding were performed and Th-I regulatory cytokine gene expression which was measured byReal time PCR were taken into consideration as parameters of protective immunity following challenge with E. tenella on 25thday. The statistical significant difference (p<0.05) in mean body weight was noticed on day zero pre infection and 26 DPI among the experimental groups with significantly improved body weight gain in G-II. A lesion score of 2 was uniformly noticed in all the groups exclusive of G-I (LS +3) indicated the possibilities of natural attenuation that can be utilized as a vaccine candidate for the production of live attenuated vaccine. The mean OPG was significantly reduced in G-III. Finally, of the plethora of avian cytokines,IFN-γ, IL-2, TNF-α and iNOS transcripts were consistently greater in G-II among the experimental groups. It was observed that, supplementation of betaine along with salinomycin in commercial broiler stock mightbe beneficial on growth performance and to minimize the gastro intestinal fluid loss. In addition to this, the additive factors in optibetaine might play important role in the process of invasion in combating the E. tenellainfection. The findings of present study is thefirst molecular evidence proving that dietary supplementation of betaine, enhance the cellular immunity in caecal coccidiosis infected chicks. However, the ability of betaine/optibetaine to provide osmotic stability during E. tenellainfection warrants further investigation.en_US
