Abstract
This research analyzed managerial competency of members and prospect of farmer producer companies in Kanpur and Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh. The specific objectives of the study were: to assess the socio-economic profile of FPO members and non-members, study the comparative managerial competency of selected FPO members and non-members, analyze the sustainability factors of FPO from member’s perspective and analyze the prospects of FPC from member’s perspective. A random sample procedure was used to collect primary data from 120 respondents from the study area. The data was then classified, tabulated, and analyzed with the help of different statistical tools. The results showed that the majority (98.33%) of FPO members were male, 40 percent belonged to the middle age group, 36.67 percent had small land holding and 56.67 percent had moderate level of overall managerial competency. Among non FPO members, 95 percent were male, 41.67 percent belonged to middle age group, 45 percent had marginal land holding and 46.67 percent had moderate level of overall managerial competency. Sustainability factors show that proper knowledge of recent technologies, computer proficiency of officials, dynamic leadership in the organization, low cost of inputs for bulk purchase, power supply, road connectivity to market, storage facilities and established marketing channel as the key factors for sustainability of FPO. SWOT analysis was conducted in order to determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that prevail in FPC. The main constraints to managerial competency include lack of knowledge and information and long-term sustainability of the FPCs. This study recommends building of managerial behaviour among FPO members and long term sustainability of the FPOs by analyzing the SWOT factors.
