Abstract
The study aimed at analyzing economic impacts of water harvesting structures on groundwater recharge, agricultural productivity, farming systems and management of water harvesting structures in Kurudi micro watershed of Kumudavathi sub watershed in Gauribidnur taluk of Kolar district. Both primary and secondary data was collected for analysis. Primary data was collected from 90 farmers, 60 from watershed and 30 from nonwatershed with the help of pre-tested and structured schedule for the year 2006-07.The analytical tools employed include discounted cash flow technique, ratio analysis and logistic regression The investment on farm ponds accounted for 60.7 per cent of the total investment followed by recharge pits (36.2 per cent). Earthen bunds and gokatte together formed less than 4 per cent of the total investment. The yield of groundwater in watershed (2240 GPH) was higher than non-watershed area (1763 GPH). The net return per acre of ground water use was highest in watershed area (Rs.l914) than the non-watershed area (Rs.l637). Few case studies of a farm pond where the beneficiary farmer has put the water into multiple uses have been compared with the case where water has not been put into multiple uses. Additional cost incurred for lifting water from the farm pond was Rs.l809, while net return was Rs.2121 with multiple uses of water. In the case of recharge pits, additional returns (Rs.22118) exceeded additional cost (Rs. 12784) with a net gain of Rs.9334. Investment analysis of water harvesting structures indicated that for every rupee of present investment on water harvesting structure there was a retirni of Rs. 1.67. The over all probability of management of water harvesting structures of the farmer's possessing farm pond and well was 0.84. The odds ratio was 5:1 indicating for every one chance of management of water harvesting structures by farmer possessing farm pond but not a well, there is five chance of management of water harvesting structures by farmers possessing both farm pond and a well.
