A field experiment entitled “Irrigation scheduling with and without mulch under different planting methods in spring sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.)” was conducted at N.E. Borlaug crop research centre of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar (U.S. Nagar), Uttarakhand during spring 2016-17. The experiment consisted of four planting methods viz. conventional flat planting (75 cm) with trash mulch, conventional flat planting (75 cm) without trash mulch, paired row trench planting (30:120 cm) with trash mulch and paired row trench planting (30:120 cm) without trash mulch and three irrigation level at 0.60 IW:CPE, 0.80 IW:CPE and 1.00 IW:CPE. The experiment was laid out in strip plot design with three replications. Sugarcane var. Co Pant 5224 was planted on 5th march, 2016. Soil of the experimental plot was silty clay loam, rich in organic carbon (1.1%), low in available nitrogen (240.8 kg/ha), high in available phosphorus (29.1 kg/ha), medium in available potassium (265.2 kg/ha) and pH of the soil was 7.5. Crop was raised as per recommended practices of the crop. Irrigation was given as per the treatments. Germination was improved in paired row planting and in mulching. At 180 DAP, shoot population, shoot height and root dry matter were recorded higher in paired row planting, mulching and irrigation at 1.00 IW:CPE ratio. Yield attributing characters, commercial cane yield and juice extraction % were also improved in paired row planting, mulching and irrigation scheduling at 1.00 IW:CPE. Water use efficiency and water productivity were higher in paired row planting, mulching and irrigation at 0.60 IW:CPE ratio. Hence in present experiment, it can be concluded that mulching @ 6 t/ha would be beneficial for the conservation of irrigation water. However, paired row planting method, mulching and irrigation scheduling at 1.00 or 0.80 IW:CPE would be beneficial for good productivity of sugarcane.en_US
