Abstract
The present investigation on "Effect of plant growth retardants on growth and flowering of china aster {Callistephus chinensis L. Nees)" was carried out at the Modibaug Garden of Horticulture section, College of Agriculture Pune-5 during June to November 2001. The experiment was laid out in the Factorial Randomized Block Design in two replications with 20 treatment combinations. Three growth retardants alar, cycocel and maleic hydrazide each at 500, 1000 and 1500 ppm concentration and a control (water spray) were applied as foliar sprays to two China aster cultivars viz., Phule Ganesh White and Phule Gaaesh Violet at 25 and 40 days after transplanting. Growth retardant treatments significantly influenced the growth, flowering and yield characters of china aster. Maleic hydrazide at 1500 ppm reduced plant height and stalk length. It also resulted in the delayed flower bud appearance and 50 per cent flowering . The number of branches were the highest with 1500 ppm cycocel. Alar 1500 ppm esulted in themaximum duration of flowering and increased vase life of flowers. Applying any of the growth retardants reduced flower diameter. Cycocel and alar each at 1500 ppm increased the number of flower and weight of flowers. he cultivar Phule Ganesh Violet responded better to the growth retardant treatments which resulted in reduced plant height and increased number of flowers and weight of the flowers.
