Abstract
Field experiment was conducted during kharif seasons of 2005 -07
under rainfed situation of ARS Kathalagere by considering different sole
and intercropping treatments of maize and urdbean. Different statistical
and biological techniques were applied to the three data sets. Response
surface methodology has been carried out on the yields of converted
maize, converted urdbean, actual maize and actual urdbean. Different
polynomial models were fitted to identify the optimum row-ratio. In all
four cases quadratic polynomial model was found to the best. Paired row
of maize with two rows of urdbean system was observed to be most
responsive. Area*Time Equivalent Ratio is one of the biological index to
find out the efficiency of intercropping system. ATER values calculated
for the data sets were subjected to pooled analysis of variance after
testing assumption of ANOVA. Significant difference between row-ratio of
ATER values observed. Paired row ratio of maize with two rows of
urdbean(2:2) noticed higher ATER values. Aggresivity-index is also one of
the important biological index to find out competitiveness of one crop
over other crop. Calculated aggressivity values were subjected to pooled
analysis of variance as done in ATER, result indicated there is significant
difference between row-ratio. 2:1 has recorded lower aggressivity value
compare to 2:2, however slightly increase in yield realized in 2:2. This
may be due to wide row spacing in 2:2. From this study, it could be
inferred that intercropping of paired row of maize with two rows of
urdbean is efficient in maize-urd based intercroping system.
