Abstract
A field experiment was conducted at farmers field in Byrasandra village,
Jangamakote hobli, Sidlaghatta taluq, Chikkaballapura district, to study the effect of
biochar on soil properties, growth and yield of finger millet (GPU-28) during Kharif
2017. The field trail included 7 treatments and 3 replications. The results revealed that
application of 100 per cent NPK + ZnSO4 + 125 per cent of biochar equivalent of FYM
recorded higher growth parameters viz plant height, number of tillers hill-1 and the yield
attributes like number of ear heads hill-1
, fingers earhead-1, 1000 grain weight, grain and
straw yield of finger millet. Nutrient concentration and total nutrient uptake was
increased in treatment T7 that received 100 per cent NPK + ZnSO4 + 125 per cent of
biochar equivalent of FYM as compared to package of practices (POP). Application of
biochar recorded significant improvement in water holding capacity and bulk density of
the soil. The soil pH, electrical conductivity and organic carbon was significantly
increased, however decrease in the aluminum status of post harvest soil was noticed.
There was significant increased in major and secondary nutrients at post harvest soil. The
iron and manganese concentration was decreased and significant increase in zinc and
copper concentration in soil.
