Abstract
ABSTRACT
The present investigation titled, “Effect of pinching, benzyl adenine and paclobutrazol on
growth and flowering in Barleria cristata L. ‘Alba’ ” was conducted at the experimental farm of
Regional Horticultural Research and Training Station, Dhaulakuan, under the aegis of Dr YSPUHF,
Nauni, Solan (H.P.), India during June 2017-Dec.2018. The experiment was laid out in a Complete
Randomized Design (Factorial) using three levels of pinching i.e. no pinching(control), single
pinching, double pinching with three levels of each benzyl adenine (drench) and paclobutrazol (foliar
spray) i.e. 0 ppm, 100 ppm and 200 ppm each being replicated thrice. The treatment of single
pinching was given to plants after one month of planting, followed by double pinching after 30 days
of single pinching as per the treatment details. Being perennial in nature, the plants were maintained
in pots (8 inch) for one year for ensuring proper establishment and better vegetative growth.
Thereafter, all the plants in pots were pruned treatment wise during second year. Drenching of benzyl
adenine was applied 30 days after pruning followed by spraying of paclobutrazol 30 days after the
treatment of benzyl adenine treatment wise. The results revealed that the double pinched plants
coupled with the application of benzyl adenine @ 200 ppm and paclobutrazol @ 200 ppm had
recorded maximum values for number of side shoots per plant (25.00), number of leaves per plant
(110.80), number of flower clusters per plant (28.87), number of flowers per cluster (11.07), number
of flowers per plant opened at a time (28.93) as well as duration of flowering (36.33). However,
maximum pot presentability score (88.00) was found in those plants which exhibited optimum plant
height (28.39 cm) and plant spread (30.81) including other pot presentability attributes in the
treatment combination comprising of double pinching along with application of paclobutrazol and
benzyl adenine @ 100 ppm each. Therefore, the treatment combination comprising, double pinching
coupled with application of benzyl adenine and paclobutrazol @ 100 ppm each was found to be most
suitable for production of potted plants of Barleria cristata L. ‘Alba’.
