Abstract
ABSTRACT
The present investigations entitled “Studies on propagation and production potential of
Malaxis acuminata D Don.” were carried out in the experimental field of the Department of Forest
Products, College of Forestry, Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan
(HP) during 2018 & 2019. In propagation studies, the sprouting percentage was very high (>93%) in
all type of propagules used i.e basal, middle and top part of rhizomes, whole rhizome and whole
pseudobulbs. However, the plants produced from basal part of rhizome as well as whole rhizomes
recorded maximum value for most of growth and yield parameters. In the experiment on impact of
size of propagule on growth and yield parameters, significant variation was observed in growth and
yield parameters. The size of propagule greatly influenced the growth and yield parameters and
maximum value for almost all the parameters was obtained in both large size rhizomes and large size
pseudobulbs. In experiment studies on impact of crop geometry on growth and yield, the results
revealed that spacing of both type of propagules (rhizome and pseudobulbs) at different spacings
affected plant growth and yield attributes. In rhizomes with the increase in growing space from 25
cm2 /plant to 100 cm2,, the value of all the growth & yield parameters increased (except sprouting
percentage and number of leaves/plant) where as in pseudobulbs with the increase in growing space
from 12.5 cm2/plant to 50 cm2 /plant the value for almost all the growth and yield parameter increased
(except number of leaves/ plant). The growing space of 50 cm2 /plant (for pseudobulbs)and 100 cm2
/plant (for rhizomes) in both propagules was required for acquiring optimum yield. Four germplasms
MA/SS (INGR-18043), MA/SH, MA/CH and MA/KW were evaluated under the present study for
growth and yield parameters. The MA/SS SS (INGR-18043) germplasm performed much better in
terms of most of growth and yield parameters in comparison to all other germplasms. The plants of
MA/SS(INGR-18043) germplasms can be easily identified on the basis of colour of newly sprouted
growth, floral bud, flowers and rhizomes.
