Abstract
ABSTRACT
The present investigation entitled “Studies on maturity indices and pre-sowing treatment of
chilogoza pine (Pinus gerardiana Wall.) was undertaken in the Department of Silviculture and
Agroforestry, Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticuture and Forestry, Nauni-Solan 173230 (HP) and
Regional Horticulture Research Station Sharbo, Peo district Kinnaur during 2010-2011. The study
involved two experiments in all. In experiment-I, for determining maturity indices the seeds were
collected from three diameter classes (30-40cm, 40-50cm and 50-60cm) at two week interval starting
from 23rd August to 18th October (5 collection dates). Cones and seeds extracted during each
collection were subjected to various physico-chemical analysis and germination studies. For optimum
maturity, the cones should be collected on 4th October when these are greyed orange in colour and
cone and seed moisture contents are 43.09 per cent and 27.90 per cent, respectively. At this stage, the
seeds exhibited maximum viability (82.67%), germination (73.23%), germination capacity (78.45%),
germination energy (46.20%) and germination value (3.11). During this collection, the seeds were
found to have 96.27mg/g total sugar, 20.20mg/g reducing sugar, 72.27mg/g non-reducing sugar,
36.62mg/g total phenol and 49.17 per cent oil content. Similarly, diameter class 30-40cm was
observed to have maximum germination (53.00%), germination capacity (59.91%), germination
energy (29.27%) and germination value (1.84).
The experiment-II, dealt with pre-sowing seed treatments of chilgoza seed using ten different
growth regulators and salt solutions and two different soaking periods. Application of 100ppm GA3
was found to result in maximum germination (60.83%), germination capacity (68.33%), germination
energy (44.17%), germination value (0.34) and germination index (0.17). The 24hr soak resulted in
better germination (50.50%) and other germination parameters in chilgoza pine seed.
