dc.description.abstractWomen who constitute half of the world's population by virtue of an accident of birth, perform two third of the world's work, receive one-tenth of its income and own less than one hundredth of its property. Since the time immemorial, women are largely employed in agriculture and allied enterprise. Of the total population of 684 million nearly 524 million people Jive in villages in India. Women constitute 47.5 per cent of the rural population. About 75 per cent of rural women belong to the families of small and marginal farmers. A majority of the landless women are from scheduled caste and scheduled tribes. Two-third of them are illiterate and most of the farm manual Labour is provided by them. They daily put in 14-18 hours of productive manual labour.en_US
