MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC NON – HEALING WOUNDS IN CATS USING THERAPEUTIC LASER

Abstract
The research study was undertaken in twelve cats that were presented to
the Small Animal Out-Patient Surgery Unit of Madras Veterinary College
Teaching Hospital with chronic non-healing wounds. The animals were divided
into two groups with six animals each in each group, viz. Group I (Therapeutic
Laser) and Group II (Conservative Therapy) after consideration of the inclusive
and exclusive wound criteria.
The Group I animals were subjected to Laser Therapy on 0, 3rd ,7th and
14th day or until granulation was evident. The Group II animals which underwent
Conservative Therapy, were treated with routine wound management protocols
like lavaging, debridement and regular wound dressing.
The wound healing was assessed in both the groups using various
parameters namely Subjective Evaluation, Wound Planimetry, Colour Flow
Doppler Ultrasonography, Histopathological Evaluation and Pain Score
Assessment.
The animals were subjectively evaluated on 0, 3rd ,7th and 14th day of
presentation, based on wound colour, odour and exudate on the wound bed.
Wound Planimetry was done by tracing the wound margins on 0, 3rd ,7th
and 14th day of presentation to determine the percentage of epithelialisation,
wound contraction and wound healing.
