Abstract The present investigation entitled “Effect of bulb size and plant density on growth, flowering and postharvest handling of Chincherinchee (Ornithogalum thyrsoides Jacq.).” was carried out at Experimental Farm of the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (H.P.) during the year 2008-2010. Two experiments were conducted using randomized block design (factorial) in the field and completely randomized design in laboratory, respectively. In the first experiment, the vegetative growth parameters viz. days taken for sprouting (23.88, 23.71 days), plant height (47.81, 48.11 cm), stem length (25.37, 26.09 cm), number of leaves per plant (17.74, 14.27), leaf area (25.21, 26.13 cm2); the flowering parameters namely days taken to first floret opening (174.44 days), number of florets/stem (53.76, 55.38), cut stem diameter (5.30 mm), cut flower weight (17.02, 17.26 g), vase life (14.52, 14.86 days), duration of flowering (19.86, 21.26 days ); the bulb production parameters like number of bulbs per plant (2.38, 1.99), weight of bulb(s) (8.94, 8.88 g), size of bulb (2.88, 2.72 cm) were found maximum in 2.4-2.8 cm bulb size and 30 bulbs per square meter density, respectively over others. Plant spread (23.78, 23.61 cm), size of florets (1.76, 1.78 cm) were found maximum in 2.4-2.8 cm bulb size and 25 bulbs per square density, respectively. In the second experiment, days taken for opening of first floret (1.57, 1.36, 1.61 days), percent of unopened florets (14.51, 13.49, 13.28 %), weight loss (32.43, 31.55, 30.50 %) were found to be minimum whereas amount of holding solution consumed (13.00, 13.84, 15.52 ml) and vase life (14.66, 14.90, 14.69 days) were maximum in 2.4-2.8 cm bulb size and 30 bulbs per square density treated in holding solution comprising of sucrose (2%) + 8-HQC (200 ppm+ GA3 (50 ppm), respectively over control.en_US
