dc.description.abstractThe present investigation entitled “Germplasm evaluation, character association and genetic divergencein wheat [TriticumaestivumL. em. Thell.]”wasconducted at Main Experiment Station (MES) of N.D. University of Agriculture and Technology, Kumarganj, Faizabad(U.P.) during Rabi 2015-2016.Thirty three varieties of bread wheat along with three checks. The experiment was laid out in Augmented Block Design. The entire experimental field was divided into 5 blocks of equal size and each block had 6 plots of test entries along with three checks in each block. The characters studiedwere days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, spike length, tillers per plant, peduncle length, 1000- grain weight, biological yield per plant, harvest index and grain yield per plant. The assessment of existing variability in the indigenous collections was done by computing means, range, correlations, path-coefficients andgenetic divergence. The wide range of variation for different characters and comparison of means of germplasm line indicating existence of very high degree of variability for all the characters in the lines of wheat, The variety produced highest grain yield per plant followed by ESWYT-108 (9.34g), EBWYT-529 (9.29g), ESWYT-146 (8.96g), EBWYT-510 (8.83g) and EBWYT-503 (8.78g) while these lines also possessed average to high mean performance for most of the yield components. Therefore, these entries are identified as most promising varieties/lines for use in hybridization program me as a donor parents. The other promising genotypes for other character than grain yield per plant is HRWYT-222 (44.96g)for 1000-grain weight, EBWYT-503 (23.47g) for biological yield per plant, DBW-88 (110.00days)for days to maturity, ESWYT-131 (20.22cm) for highest peduncle length and ESWYT-131(16.08cm) for minimum peduncle length, EBWYT-529 (7.00) for tillers per plant, EBWYT-507 (88.95cm) for plant height, ESWYT-134(10.77cm) for spike length, ESWYT-145 (80.00days) for days to 50% flowering, ESWYT-146 (44.28%) for harvest index. A very strong positive association of grain yield per plant was observed with harvest index (0.7790cm) followed by biological yield/ plant (0.7674g), spike length (0.6077cm) and 1000-grain weight (0.5151g). The characters showing highly significant positive correlation among yield and its components suggested that during selection these characters may be given due to importance for developing high yielding varieties. The days to maturity & test weight showed non-significant negative correlation with grain yield per plant.en_US
