The early childhood years are the critical yearsduring which an individual can acquire certain skills more effectively and effortlessly than at any other time. To ensure proper development of the child's motor and mental development adequate nutrition and stimulating environment are essential. Poor nutritional status, coupled withimpoverished environment retards the mental development of children. The present study was undertaken to determine theeffect of home stimulation programme on the mental deve— lopment of malnourished children (24—30 months). The stimulation programme used in the present study is a modified version of an already developed stimulation kit for 24—30 months urban slum children. The kit consisted of eighteen conceptual and five language activities. The sample consisted of thirty one children fromfive slums of Hyderabad city. Fifteen children constituted the experimental group and sixteen children constituted the control group. parameter, malnourished for the study. Taking weight for age as the children in grade II were taken The mothers were oriented regarding the nutritio—nal status of their children and educated on the impor-tance of providing nutritious food. They were also oriented _ towards the stimulation programme and were trained in the use of materials included in the stimula— tion kit. The performance of the children in both thegroups was tested before and after implementation of thestimulation programme. A score card was used to assess the performance of the children. The stimulation programme was implemented for nine weeks to experimental group children. After implementation of the stimulation programme there was a significant improvement in the scores of the experimental group when compared to the control group. Thus, exposure of the experimental group children to the stimulation programme resulted in marked improvement in their scores. Another finding was that there were no sex differences in the performance of the children. Hence, it can be inferred that the stimulationprogramme planned for 24—30 months urban slum children can be used effectively for improving the mental development of malnourished children.en_US
