Abstract
The present study was designed to develop asoftware programme to obtain diet plans for diet related diseases. The objectives of the study were to collect the commonly consumed Breakfast, Main meal (Lunch + Dinner) and snack items consumed in Andhra Pradesh, compute their nutritive—values and with these values as a base develop soft ware programme for obtaining menu plan for a given disease condition. The creation of programme involved preparation of data, feeding the data in computers, development of files for the programme, creation of data bases, output of the programme and feasibility test of the programme. One hundred and fifty commonly consumed break—fast, main meal and snack recipes in Andhra Pradesh were collected. Fifty three files and eleven databases were created in ‘foxpro' language to develop the programme. In ,order to obtain meal plans for a given disease conditions, database were created with respect to recipes, computation of nutritive Value of the recipes, demographic informa— tion, basal metabolic rate and energy expenditure, dieti— cian's advice, dietary principles and guidelines, sample menu, breakfast, main meal and snacks alternatives. ” Based on the inputs of demographic informationand the dietician's advice with respect to nutrient requirements, the output obtained was interms of sample menu, general principles and guidelines to be followed by the patient and alternatives for Breakfast, main meal and snack items. The programme developed was a user fiendly prog—ramme and hence Only one command was created to simplify programme operation. A complete "Help” feature was also incorporated in the programme which could display a detailed explanation of what the user attempts to do and how to do it. Subsequent to 'the development of the programmethe feasibility test was conducted in the Dietetic Depar— tment of a corporate hospital (Medicity Hospital). This programme was tried out for 314 patients requiring diet plans for various disease conditions. It was found that the programme was extremely useful and easily adaptable by different patients.
