EFFECT OF PRECEDING CROP SAND FYM ON THE YIELD AND QUALITY OF ORIENTAL TOBACCO

Abstract
Fieldexperimententitled“EffectofprecedingcropsandFYMontheyieldandqualityoforientaltobacco”wascarriedoutduringrabi,2000on farmer’s field of Nallpareddigaripalli village, Chinnagottigallu mandal, ChittoordistrictofAndhraPredesh,withaviewtofindoutsuitablepreceding crOp and FYM level. Three preceding crops viz., gingelly, greegram, groundnutandfallowandtwomanuriallevelsviz.,0(control)and4tha"of FYM were tried in a randomized block design with factorial concept and replicatedthrice.ThesoilwasofsandyloamintexturewithpHof6.8,lowin availablenitrogen(196kgha!) mediuminavailablephosphorus(31kgha”1) andavailablepotassium(177kgha") PrecedingcropsandFYMaswellastheirinteractionhassignificantly influencedtheplantgrowthcharacters,yield,qualityandeconomicreturnsof orientaltobacco. Allthegrowthcharactersweresignificantly influencedbypreceding crops. Among different preceding crops, groundnut has resulted in taller
plants, more number ofleaves plant'l, higher LAl and higher drymatter production of tobacco. Reduced growthstatureoftobacco wasassociated withgingellyasprecedingcr0p. [Maximumandminimumgreenleafandcuredleafyieldsoftobacco were obtainedinthecropraisedaftergroundnutandgingelly,respectively. Groundnutasprecedingcrophas increasednicotinecontent,chloridecontentandnetreturnsoftobacco,whereastotalsugarswerefoundreduced. Ontheotherhand,highesttotalsugarcontentandlowestnicotineandchloride contentwereobservedintobaccoprecededbygingelly.Netreturnswerealso thelowestwithgingelly—tobaccosequence. ApplicationofFYMhasincreasedallthegrowthcharactersoftobacco.Signi ficantly taller plants, more number ofleaves plant'l, higherLAI anddrymatterproductionwereobservedinthecropreceived4tha"1ofFYM. Significantlyhighergreenleafandcuredleafyieldsoftobacco wereobservedwiththe applicationofFYM@4tha". Qualitycharactersviz., nicotine content, and chloride content increased, while the total sugars decreased,withapplicationofFYM.Grossaswellasnetreturnsandbenefit costratiowerehigherwiththeapplicationofFYM@4tha'l. The interaction of preceding crops and FYM has significantlyin fluencedtheplantgrowthcharacters,yield,qualityandeconomicreturnsof tobacco.TobaccoprecededbygroundnutandmanuredwithFYM@4tha"l hasresultedintallerplants,morenumberofleavesplant'l,higherLAI,and drymatterproduction. Similartrendwasobservedwithregardtogreenleaf andcuredleafyields,nicotinecontent,chloridecontent,grossreturnsand net returns.Tobaccoprecededbygingellyanddidnotreceiveanymanure has producedthelowestgrowth characters,greenandcuredleafyieldsandpoor economicreturns. ItcanbeinferredformtheabovestudythatorientaltobaccoreceivingFYMprecededbylegumeslikegroundnutorgreengramhasresultedinhigher yieldandnetreturns.Exhaustivecropslikegingellyasprecedingcropresulted inloweryield andnetreturns.
