Abstract
Investigations were carried out to evaluate certain shelf life
determining and other related parameters of the formulations of Metarhizium
anisopliae (Metschinkoff) Sorokin. The influence of different carrier materials
viz., Bentonite, Attapulgite, Talc and Kaolinite was tested for the shelf life of
Metarhizium anisopliae formulation. Similarly, to find out an optimum
temperature for an effective storage, four different temperatures viz.,
refrigerated (5°C), cool temperature (15°C), room temperature (22°C) and
high temperature (40°C) were evaluated. On account of packing material,
milky white polythene bags, transparent polythene bags, black polythene bags
and silver coated polythene bags were tested for their suitability as packing
material.

The out come of the studies indicated that among the carrier
material, talc based formulations were found to be more suitable with
promising conidial concentration/gm and prolonged viability and pathogenicity.
As the Days After Formulation (DAF) were increasing there was a general
trend of decline in all the above shelf life determining parameters. As far as
storage temperature is concerned, refrigerated temperature (5°C) found to be
more suitable than the other temperature ranges tested with high conidial
concentration /gm, maximum conidial viability and highest pathogenicity towards
target pest. Even though cool temperature and room temperature did fare well
but only up to 60 DAF. Packing material is an important parameter that
influences the quality and shelf life of the formulation. Several types of
packing material were tested. Out of these, polythene bags made of milky white
packing material were found to be more suitable followed by silver coated
polythene bags. Black and transparent polythene bags were found less suitable for
this purpose. Higher conidial concentration/gm with promising conidial viability
and pathogenicity was noticed when the formulation is packed in milky white
polythene bags.
Overall results suggested that M. anisopliae formulation made up of
talc based powder and packed in milky white polythene material is proved to
have better shelf life with quality of the product maintained especially when
stored in refrigerated temperature (5°C) or cool temperature (15°C)
