ANTICOCCIDIAL AND IMMUNOMODULATORY EFFECTS OF INDIGENOUS HERBAL PLANTS AGAINST EXPERIMENTAL COCCIDIOSIS IN POULTRY

dc.description.abstractThe anticoccidial and immunomodulatory effects of aqueous extract of Zingiber officinale (rhizome), ethanolic extract of Azadirachta indica (leaves) and methanolic extract of Hippophae salicifolia (leaves) were evaluated against the mixed coccidial infection (Eimeria spp.), in experimental trial in poultry. The present study revealed that coccidial infection caused significant decrease in body weights, inferior feed conversion ratio, hematological as well as biochemical parameters in the birds. However, after treatment with herbal plant extracts, significant increase in weight gain was observed along with other parameters. The ethanolic extract of neem (Azadirachta indica) @ 7g/liter of water was found to have better anticoccidial activity and least histopathological lesions as compared to other herbal plants extract and their mixture. Aqueous extract of ginger (Zingiber officinale) @ 6g/liter of water was found to be the best feed additive and most effective in improving body weights, feed conversion ratio, improving hematological and biochemical indices in infected birds followed by mixture of these herbs than neem (Azadirachta indica) ethanolic extract and than seabuckthorn (Hippophae salicifolia) methanolic extract @ 10g/liter of water. As an immunomodulatory, Aqueous extract of ginger (Zingiber officinale) improved humoral as well as cell mediated immune responses in infected birds, followed by mixture of these herbal plants than neem (Azadirachta indica) ethanolic extract and seabuckthorn (Hippophae salicifolia) methanolic extract.en_US
