The present study was conducted in Bastar Plateau of Chhattisgarh, 300 farmers were selected randomly from six blocks of Bastar and Kanker districts. The primary data were collected for the year 2016-17. The major findings of this study revealed that the average size of holding of the sample households was 1.78hectares. Paddy, maize, millets and tuber crops were the major and minor crops grown in the study area. The five major tuber crops namely colocasia, sweet potato, cassava, elephant foot yam and greater yam were considered for the present study. The average size of holding of tuber crops grower was 0.36 ha and average cropping intensity per farm was 141.57 per cent. On an average the cost of cultivation per hectare of tuber crops like colocasia, sweet potato, cassava, elephant foot yam and greater yamwere calculated to be Rs. 56012.07, Rs. 52709.49, Rs. 49224.74, Rs. 96224.79 and Rs. 65611.73 respectively. On an average yield of tuber crops like colocasia, sweet potato, cassava, elephant foot yam and greater yamwere observed 81.41 quintals, 88.83 quintals, 81.84 quintals, 151.18 quintals and 103.88 quintals per hectare and average input-output ratio was 1: 2.98, 1: 2.64, 1: 2.93, 1: 3.31 and 1: 2.52 respectively. There were two marketing channels for the marketing of tuber crops. Channel-I: Producer – village merchant – wholesalers – retailers – consumers and Channel-II: Producer – consumers. The most efficient marketing channel for tuber crops was found to be channel-II followed by channel-I. Producer share in consumer rupee were higher in channel-II. The major constraints in production of tuber crops were lack of education and recommended production technology for tuber crops followed by less interest in tuber cultivation due to low yield of crops in the area. Constraints in marketing of tuber crops were small marketable surplus for tuber crops followed by lack of regulated and cooperative market in the study area. Looking to the profitability of tuber crops in the study area farmers may be encouraged to grow tuber crops in larger area. For increasing the productivity of tuber crops better seed/planting material of high yielding varieties must be provide to the farmers on subsidized rates with assured irrigation facilities. Farmers as well as extension workers should trained regarding its cultivation, harvesting and processing technology. Marketing of tuber crops in the study area is not properly organized and that the reason farmer’s share in the price paid by the ultimate consumer is very small. Lack of proper storage structures facilities forces farmers as well as other intermediaries to sale it off immediately at lower prices. There is an urgent need to developed proper storage in order to get higher returns of the produce. Most of the tuber crops have value added products like energy drinks, jam, pickles, sauce etc. This type of value added products might also be prepared in the state through small scale industries, which will encourage farmers to cultivate tuber crops in large areas. The study suggested that small processing unit may be started for the processing of tuber crops tor fetching higher returns from all tuber crops being grown by the farmers of the study area. This will boost up the economy of the farmers as well as the State of Chhattisgarh.en_US
