Abstract
ABSTRACT The present investigations entitled “Studies on the nursery production of under protected conditions” was conducted at the experimental field of Department of Fruit Science, Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan during 2013-14. Two experiments were laid out in Completely Randomized Design. In first experiment 18 treatments viz. seed soaking with 50 and 100 ppm GA 3and PGPR’s- B 6 (Bacillus licheniformis) and B.m (Bacillus methylotroicus), soaking of seed + drenching of seedlings with PGPR-B 6and B.m, drenching with B 6and B.m, foliar spray of GA 3(50, 100 and 150 ppm), CPPU (5, 10 and 15 ppm), urea (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 %) and untreated control were given and each treatment was replicated thrice. The results revealed that seed soaking in 100 ppm GA 3 for 12 hours was the best treatments for increasing seedling height (86.03 cm), diameter (6.11 mm), root growth (14.50 m), proportion of buddable seedlings (97 %) and growth of budded plants which resulted in highest 97 per cent saleable plants in a year under protective conditions. Soaking of seed and drenching with PGPR-B 6 also registered good seedling and root growth, attained 95 per cent buddable seedlings and resulted in production of 94 per cent saleable plants in a year. In second experiment, seeds of different varieties viz. crab apple, Gold Spur, Granny Smith, Red Gold, Royal Delicious, Spartan, Winter Banana and Golden Delicious were tested as a rootstock. Crab apple was found to be the best seedling rootstock as it resulted in highest seed germination (92 %), production of more vigorous seedlings (75.17 cm) out of which 83 per cent attain buddable size within six months after sowing. The plants raised on this rootstock attained better height (92.67 cm) and 81 per cent plants become saleable in a year under protective conditions. Beside crab apple, seedling rootstocks of Red Gold and Granny Smith was found better in comparison to Gold Spur and Winter Banana.
