Abstract
The investigation “Studies on effect of topping and plant growth retardant on growth, yield and quality traits of Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) varieties under agro-climatic condition of Chhattisgarh plains” was carried out in the field of Horticulture Research cum Instructional Farm, Department of Vegetable Science, College of Agriculture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (Chhattisgarh) during Rabi 2018-19 and 2019-20. The experiment consist of four varieties of Sweet potato varieties Indira Madhur, Indira Nandani, Sree Rethna and Chhattisgarh Sarkarkand Priya, three topping treatment i) Control (T0, No Topping) (ii) Topping 30 cm from top at 60 DAP (T1) (iii) Topping 30 cm from top at 80 DAP (T2), and two plant growth retardant treatments (i) Control (P0), (ii) Cycocel 500ppm as foliar spray at 60 and 80 DAP (P1). Factorial Randomized Block Design was used to set up the three factor with three replications. There were all together 24 treatments in this combinations. The results revealed that Chhattisgarh Sarkarkand Priya (V4), among topping treatments, T1 i.e topping at 60 DAP and P1 i.e cycocel 500ppm as foliar spray at 60 and 80 DAP had gave the highest growth parameters (number of leaves, number of nodes per vine, fresh wt. of leaf per plant, dry wt. of leaf per plant, fresh wt. of vine, dry wt. of vine), yield attribute (root tuber length, root tuber breadth, root tuber girth, number of root tubers per plant, fresh wt. of root tuber per plant(g), total root tuber yield(q ha-1) and dry matter content) and quality parameters (total soluble solids, total sugar content in root tubers, reducing sugar and protein content) during both the years (2018-19 and 2019-20) and in case of pooled mean. The interaction between varieties, topping and growth retardant treatments exhibited significant impact on growth, yield and quality traits of sweet potato. The maximum was observed in treatment combination (V4 T0 P1) i.e cycocel 500ppm as foliar spray at 60 and 80 DAP it gave significantly maximum number of leaves, number of nodes, fresh wt. of leaves per plant, dry weight of leaf per plant, fresh weight of vine, dry weight of vine, root tuber length, root tuber breadth, root tuber girth, TSS Brix0, total sugar content in root tuber, reducing sugar and protein content. However, (V4 T1 P1) i.e when topping at 60 DAP and cycocel 500ppm as foliar spray at 60 and 80 DAP it gave maximum number of root tubers per plant, fresh wt. of root tuber per plant (g), total root tubers yield(q ha-1),dry matter content and starch recovery of root tuber during both the years and on the basis of pooled mean. The interactions among V4 T1 P1 i.e when topping at 60 DAP and cycocel 500ppm as foliar spay at 60 and 80 DAP resulted in considerably highest yield and quality traits of sweet potato during (2018-19 and 2019-20) both years and pooled mean. The Maximum input-output ratio was observed (1:3.67, 1:3.71 and 1:3.69) in variety V4 –Chhattisgarh Sarkarkand Priya under the treatment V4 T1 P1 i.e when topping at 60 DAP and cycocel 500ppm as foliar spray at 60 and 80 DAP during both the years and pooled mean.
