Abstract
Rhizobium spp. clusterbean (Guar) strains isolated from diverse locations
having different antibiotic resistance pattern, growth kinetics on different media and
plasmid profiles have been mutagenically improved for higher symbiotic infectivity.
Five tested strains BcR-7, BcR-33, BcR-34, BcR-35 and BcR-40 with StmR
marker were mutagenically treated by -irradiation and mutants were screened for
their pectin degrading ability. Only ten upward mutants (which were showing better
pectin degrading ability as compared to their parent strains) were further characterized
and tested for their symbiotic infection ability and pectin utilizing ability. Additionally,
competitive ability of parent strains and their mutants was evaluated by conjugally
transferring GFP marker. Plant infection test with the parent strains and mutants gave
2. 4 folds increase competitive ability as evidenced by higher number of nodules
produced on guar by mutants generated in this study.
