Abstract
The field experiment entitled, “Effect of phosphorus and zinc fertilization on growth, yield and quality of fodder sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.)” was conducted during kharif season of 2018 at Regional Research Station, Bawal, Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University with the objectives to study the effect of phosphorus and zinc on growth, yield, quality of fodder sorghum, to know the uptake of nutrient by fodder sorghum and to work out economics of nutrient requirement of sorghum crop. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with four different phosphorus levels in main plot viz. 0, 7.5, 15 and 22.5 kg P2O5 ha-1 and four different levels of zinc in sub plot viz. 0, 0.50 %, 0.75 % foliar sprays of ZnSO4 and 25 kg ZnSO4 as basal dose. The results indicated that the maximum green (436.6 q ha-1) and dry fodder yield (95.2 q ha-1) was significantly obtained when fodder sorghum was fertilized with 22.5 kg P2O5 ha-1 followed by 15 kg P2O5 ha-1 over control. Total crude protein content (8.08 %) was found higher with 22.5 kg P2O5 ha-1 over all other treatments. Significantly higher HCN content noticed in 22.5 kg P2O5 ha-1 treatment. Highest total uptake of P 18.9 kg ha-1 and Zn 162.8 g ha-1 was obtained with P applied @ 22.5 kg ha-1. Application of 22.5 kg P2O5 ha-1 recorded higher gross returns (Rs.56006 ha-1), net returns (Rs.23378 ha-1) and B: C (1.72) followed by 7.5 kg P2O5 ha-1, 15 kg P2O5 ha-1 and control. Significantly higher green (408.1 q ha-1) and dry fodder yield (92.1 q ha-1)of sorghum recorded with 25 kg ZnSO4 over foliar applications of ZnSO4 @ 0.50 % (86.1 q ha-1), 0.75 % (86.7 q ha-1) and control whereas, foliar treatments were found at par with each other. Highest uptake of zinc (163.5 g ha-1) was obtained significantly with 25 kg ZnSO4 soil application over other zinc treatments. Application of ZnSO4 25 kg ha-1 recorded higher gross returns (Rs.52535 ha-1), net returns (Rs.20156 ha-1) and B: C (1.62) over foliar application of ZnSO4 @ 0.50 %, 0.75 % and control.
