Abstract
Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), a slow-growing acid-fast bacterium, causes Johne's disease or paratuberculosis, a progressive granulomatous enteritis of ruminants, characterized by chronic or intermittent, therapy-resistant diarrhea, severe emaciation and eventual death. Cattle become infected as young calves when suckling teats get contaminated with MAP infected faeces. MAP infection often occurs through faecal-oral route, due to ingestion of contaminated faecal material. Calves less than 30 days of age are most susceptible to infection and most cattle are infected before they were four months of age (Merkal et. al., 1987). This study was taken to know the prevalence of MAP infection in calves below 6 months of age.
