CORRELATION AND PATH COEFFICIENT ANALYSIS BETWEEN SEED YIELD AND ITS COMPONENT CHARACTERS IN M4 AND M5 GENERATIONS OF BAMBARA GROUNDNUT (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.)

| dc.description | An investigation on association of seed yield and its traits was carried out at K-block, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, during Kharif and Rabi (2012) with the objectives to assess genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis between seed yield and its component characters and to estimate intergeneration correlation among yield and its components in M4 and M5 generations. Variability studies revealed an overall increase in mean for all characters, except days to 50 per cent flowering in M4 and plant height, 100 seed weight and shelling percentage in M5 generation. A wider range and increased variability was observed for all characters in the mutant families compared to control except 50 per cent flowering in both generations. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was observed for characters, plant height (71,37.15), plant spread (61,26.96) and 100 seed weight (79,24.08) in M4 and 100 seed weight (91,32.90) in M5 generation. A higher Correlation was recorded for characters, number of pods plant-1 (0.863) and pod yield plant-1 (0.967) in M4 and Plant height, plant spread, number of pods plant-1 (0.923) and pod yield plant-1 (0.934) in M5 generation showed high significant correlation with seed yield. A higher positive direct effect was observed for all characters, except number of branches plant-1 in M4 and number of branches plant-1, days to 50 per cent flowering in M5 generation. Pod yield had highest indirect effect on seed yield. Significant association was not recorded for any of characters from intergeneration correlation. | en_US |
