dc.description.abstract | Birthweightis areliableindex of intrauterinegrowth and a majordeterminantofchildsurvival, future physical growthandmentaldevelopment. With theobjectiveoffindingtherelationship of cordblood zinc, adenosine deaminase (ADA) to thebirthweightofneonatesthepresentstudy was designed. Cordblood zine, adenosine deaminase, total proteins, albumins, albumin/globulinratio andhemoglobin levelswereestimated in lowbirthweight(LBW)andnormalbirthweightneonates. Thirtyfulltermnewbornswho were weighinglessthanor equal to2.5kgandthirtyfulltermnewborns whowere weighingmorethan2.5kgservedas testandcontrol groups respectively. Cord bloodsamples were collectedfrom these subjects immediately afterdelivery and serum was used for the analysisofzinc, adenosinedeaminase, totalproteins, albumins, albumin/ globulinratio usingstandard methods. Haemoglobinwas estimated in thewholeblood. Theresultsofthestudyindicatedthatthezinclevelsin thecordbloodoflowbirthweightand normal birthweightwerenotsignifi cantlydifferent. Adenosinedeaminase, total proteins, albumins and li‘emoglobin levelsoflowbirthweightneonateswere significantlylowwhen comparedtonormal birthweightneonates. Thestudyshowsthatthezincstatusoffulltemibabiesisindependent ofbirthweight. Thereducedadenosinedeaminaselevels in lowbirthweightneonatesindicatetheirreducedcellmediatedimmunity.
