The present study was taken up in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu because of the distinction of having large number of seasonal ponds and tanks. Data were collected from 25 Indian Major Carp (IMC) seed producing and 75 Indian Major Carp (IMC) seed rearing farmers in the district. The respondents were selected randomly and information on various aspects of IMC seed production and rearing were collected with structured interview schedule. Above fifty percent of the IMC seed producers (56.6%) and IMC seed rearing farmers (61.33%) were in the age group of 31-50 years. All the IMC seed producers and rearing farmers were literate in this study. Among IMC seed production, fixed costs of Interest on capital, permanent labour and variable costs of brooders occupied the major costs on total cost. Among seed rearing, fixed costs of Interest on capital, permanent labour and variable costs of stocking and feeding occupied the major costs on total cost. On comparing benefit cost ratio of IMC seed production (2.45) and seed rearing (2.32), BCR of seed production was high. Hence, IMC seed production could be considered as the profitable business enterprise with a net profit of Rs. 64,701.19 per acre per crop. The estimated demand for IMC seed in the district was worked out to 266.25 lakh of carp seeds while the total IMC seed supply in the study area was estimated to be 2292.00 lakhs. The district has an excess supply of about 2025.75 lakh carp seeds. The various constraints perceived by the respondents were ranked, analysed by Rank Based Quotient (RBQ) method. Short supply of water was the major constraint faced by the seed producers and inadequate availability of quality carp seeds was the major constraint faced by the farmers involved in IMC seed rearing.en_US
