Abstract
ABSTRACT The present study entitled, “Farmers attitude towards adopting modern farm management practices in vegetable farm business at Solan district, Himachal Pradesh” was undertaken with the purpose to understand the farmers awareness about various modern farm management practices being adopted in vegetable farming and also intend to understand the farmers’ attitude towards adopting modern farm management practices in vegetable farming with reference to demographic variables. The study has categorically highlighted the problems and challenges faced by vegetable growers while adopting modern farm business management practices and to seek the farmers’ suggestions for improvising the implementation of modern farm practices. For present investigation, sample size of about 140 farmers of Solan district of Himachal Pradesh was taken. A selfstructured questionnaire was prepared for the present study. It was specifically recorded from the results that there has been a higher degree of awareness among the vegetable cultivators for modern farm business management practices in general. The common opinion was emerged among the farming community that the modern farm practices are being able to increase the farming annual income. Commonly tomato is the most preferable crop, witnessing the application of modern farm management practices. Farmers’ were hold the common opinion that higher productivity of agriculture is heavily depends upon good variety seeds. Farmers were not aware about the benefits generated from the modern farm management practices. Word of mouth fellow farmers, retailers and distributors were observed to be the key source of market updates and intelligence information among the farming community. It was also noticed that the training, knowledge, proper budget, farm planning and farm business appraisal were mainly considered by the farmers attitude study while adopting the modern farm business management practices. Study also revealed that lack of quality raw material, pest and disease control and ineffective market condition were the key problems faced while adopting modern farm management practices in vegetable farm business. Challenges like hygiene storage facility for the harvested vegetables, pest and disease control and ineffective market condition were the key areas, where farmers are expecting the government intervention which will definitely play a supportive role. In terms to farmers’ attitude towards modern farm business management practices, it emerged from the study that modern practices helping greatlyto save time, managing the labour and net worth pertain cost incurred by the farmers.
