Abstract
ABSTRACT The present investigation entitled, “Studies on the effect of cocopeat based growing media for pot plant production of China aster (Callistephus chinensis (L.) Nees)” was carried out at the Research Farm of the Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (HP) during 2018-19. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (Factorial) using four growing medium i.e. (i) sand+ soil+ FYM (1:1:1,v/v), (ii) sand+ soil+ FYM+ cocopeat (1:1:1:1,v/v), (iii) [sand+ soil+ FYM (1:1:1, v/v)] + cocopeat (1:1, v/v), (iv) [sand+soil+FYM (1:1:1, v/v)] + cocopeat (1:3, v/v) and five cultivars viz., ‘Arka Aadhya’, ‘Arka Archana’, ‘Arka Kamini’, ‘Local White’ and ‘Local Pink’. The observations were recorded on various growth and flowering parameters. The maximum plant height (56.37 cm), earliest visible bud formation (72.17 days), bud opening (76.88 days) and first flower opening (80.98 days) was noticed in cv. ‘Arka Kamini’. However, minimum days for peak flowering in cv. ‘Arka Aadhya’ (91.43 days), maximum number of side shoots per plant (8.78), maximum flowers (16.90), flower size (6.10 cm) and maximum pot presentability score (89.80) were recorded in cv. ‘Arka Archana’ when grown in medium containing sand + soil + FYM + cocopeat (1:1:1:1, v/v). However, maximum plant spread in cv. ‘Local White’ (27.86 cm) and maximum flowering duration in cv. ‘Arka Archana’ (43.67 days) were recorded in medium containing[sand + soil + FYM (1:1:1, v/v)] + cocopeat (1:1, v/v).
