Abstract
A field experiment entitled “Effect of thiourea on growth and development of
Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus L.) cv. Chandra” was conducted during the year
2022-23, at the Instructional Farm, Department of Fruit Science, College of Horticulture
and Forestry, Jhalawar. The experiment consisted of 9 treatments laid out in Randomized
Block Design with three replications.
Among different treatments, application of T8 (Thiourea 2.00%) to individual
plant was found significantly superior over other treatments with respect to growth and
development parameters such as per cent increase in plant height (17.84%), rootstock
girth (21.82%), scion girth (21.34%), number of leaves per plant (26.55%), length of
internode (9.40%), number of nodes per plant (8.13%), leaf length (10.10%), leaf width
(20.68%) and leaf area (32.88%).
The foliar application of thiourea had significant effect on stress parameters. The
treatment T8 was found significantly superior over other treatments. The minimum
proline content (0.339 μmol. g-1) was found in treatment T8 (Thiourea 2.00%) and other
parameters like stomatal conductance (7.58 mmol m-2 s-1), Relative Water Content
(RWC) (82.48%), chlorophyll content (2.23 mg g-1), N (1.59%), P (0.279%), K (0.572%)
and S (0.218%) contents were observed maximum in treatment T8 (Thiourea 2.00%) at
the time of final observation during March.
From the experiment, it may be summarized that T8 (Thiourea 2.00%) proved
superiority over all treatments in improving growth and development parameters of
jackfruit plant and also in improving stress parameters. However, it requires more study
for further confirmation of results.
