Abstract
This report deals with the importance of intraosseous route of fluid administration for saving a 35-day-old pup affected with Parvoviral enteritis. A 35-day-old male pup weighing about 1 kg was presented with the history of anorexia, vomiting and bloody diarrhoea. Clinical examination revealed the presence of dehydration, congested mucous membrane, tachycardia, tachypnea, body temperature of 98.1° F and feeble pulse rate. The animal was wrapped with blanket to provide warmth. Result of skin turgor test was more than 4 seconds. Peripheral Intravenous access was attempted but, due to the volume-depleted state of the animal, multiple attempts at cephalic catheterization failed. Hence intraosseous (IO) infusion was performed via the proximal femur. The faecal sample of the animal was subjected to PCR to confirm the case as Parvoviral enteritis.
