Abstract
To evaluate the economic aspects, the study entitled “Economic
analysis of bengalgram in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh” was
conducted with the following specific objectives:
1. To estimate growth rates in area, production and productivity in
bengalgram.
2. To compare the cost and returns of bengalgram in different sizes of
farms.
3. To estimate the resource use efficiency on different sizes of farms.
4. To study the production and marketing constraints in bengalgram.
Prakasam district was purposively selected as it stood second place in
both area and production of bengalgram in Andhra Pradesh. A three stage
sampling technique was adopted to select respondents. Three mandals were
selected based on the highest area grown in the district. Two villages from
each mandal with 20 farmers from each village were selected based on the
highest area cultivated. All the bengalgram growers were categorized into two
groups namely Group I and Group II, and 60 farmers were selected randomly
in each group making the total sample size 120. The tabular analysis was
used to estimate cost and returns and problems in production and marketing.
Compound growth rate and Cobb-Douglas type of production function were
employed, to study the area, production and productivity of bengalgram crop
in Prakasam district as well as in Andhra Pradesh and resource use efficiency
in bengalgram production.
The results revealed that the compound growth rates of bengalgram of
Andhra Pradesh showed a positive significant increasing growth in area,
production and productivity at 13.25, 19.09 and 5.25 per cent per annum,
respectively. Similarly, in Prakasam district a positive significant increasing
growth rates in area, production and productivity were 30.04, 37.11 and 5.43
per cent per annum, respectively.
The average total cost per hectare was Rs.50819.93 and increased with
the farm size. Machine labour (Rs.8169.91) was the major cost component in
bengalgram production occupying on an average about 16.08 per cent of total
cost. Both gross returns (Rs.60334.5) and net returns (Rs.4432.57) increased
with the increase in farm size. On an average cost of production per quintal
was Rs.2400.56.
Functional analysis revealed the operation of diminishing marginal return
to scale. In bengalgram cultivation the inputs like seed and manures and
fertilizers were exerting significant influence on gross returns. The marginal
value of product to opportunity cost ratios of machine labour, manures and
fertilizers and plant protection chemicals were being subjected to excessive
utilization on pooled bengalgram farms. Hence there is a need to reorganise
and optimum utilization of these resources would reduce the cost of cultivation
and it would leads to increased profit.
The important production and marketing problems faced by the farmers
were lack of quality seeds, Non availability of timely credit, high cost of
fertilizers and low remunerative price for their produce. These problems must
be rectified to augment higher profits.
