A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2019-2020 in agriculture research station Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi., Uttar Pradesh. To Effect of pre and post emergence herbicide on weed control in maize. There were 17 treatment combinations laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatment consisted of application of atrazine 50 WP alone or in combination with pendimethalin 38.7 CS as a pre emergence with hand weeding at 40 DAS. The atrazine and 2,4-D Sodium salt were also applied as a post emergence. They were applied alone or in combination with tambotrione or topramezone (grass controlling herbicide) or halosulfuron (sedge controlling herbicide) at 20 DAS. These treatments were compared with hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS, Weed free check and weedy check. The experiment was laid out in vertisols with pH 8.24. The soil was medium in available nitrogen (310.84 kg/ha), available phosphorus (41.24 kgha) and available potassium (180.16 kg/ha). The hybrid maize (DHM-109) was sown on 5 November, 2019 by giving spacing of 60x30 cm. The data revealed that application of atrazine 50 WP @0.625 kg ai ha-l + pendimethalin 38.7 CS @ 0.9675 kg ai ba' as pre-emergence- HW at 40 DAS was found to be the best pre-emergence weed control treatments as that was already recommended. Among post emergence herbicides, application of atrazine 50 WP @ 1.25 kg at ha-1 + topramezone @ 0.0252 kg arba at 20 DAS or atrazine 50 WP @ 1.25 kg ai ha-1+ tambotrione @ 0.0483 kg a.i ha-1 at 20 DAS was equally effective that recorded significantly higher grain yield, net returns and benefit cost ratio over other treatments. Application of 2, 4-D Sodium salt 80% @ 2 kg arba at 20 DAS controlled broad leaf weeds effectively but phytotoxic to maize.en_US
