Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) belong to the family Euphorbiaceae. It is commonly called as physic nut or purging nut and is native to Mexico and Central America. The present study was taken up to asses natural variation existing in seed yield and its attributing traits and oil content in 115 seedling progenies of Jatropha planted at K- block of GKVK, Bengaluru during 2005. PCV was high for fruits per plant, fruit yield per plant, seed yield and oil yield, moderate for mean fruit weight and 100 seed weight, low for shelling per cent and oil content. Fruits per plant and fruit yield per plant exhibited high positive direct effect and significant positive correlation with seed yield indicating scope for direct selection. Contrary to this oil content and shelling per cent had negative association with seed yield. The seedling progenies are grouped into different clusters based on UPGMA analysis. The maximum mean seed yield was present in the genotypes of clusters II, III, and IV. The maximum mean oil content was present in the genotypes of clusters I and IX. Pollination experiment clearly revealed the predominance of cross pollination in Jatropha curcas with the apomixis up to 28.5 per cent. The average female to male flower ratio in the Jatropha was around 14.4 to 105.73. Explant from one year old plant exhibited higher callus induction and direct regeneration potential than those from five year old plant. The information gathered by the present study could be effectively utilized in planning the proper breeding programme in the seedling progenies.en_US
