dc.description.abstractThe present study was carried out to assess the purchase and consumption of various processed foods among urban families of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Three hundred families belonging to middle and high income groups were selected. Expenditure on food from the total monthly income was 15-55 percent out of which 5—25 percent of the total food expenditure and 2—8 percent of the total monthly income was spent on processed foods. The main reasons given for preferring processed foods were ”time saving” and ”easy to prepare” aspects of processed foods. The other lesser reasons were ”tasty”, ”nutritious” and ”liked by family members”. It was seen that on an average employed housewives were spending more on processed foods, than unemployed housewives.en_US
