Abstract
The present investigation on water and sediment quality of Krishnapatnam coastal region (Southeast coast of India) with respect to mangrove and beach areas was carried out for a period of ten (10) months from June, 2016 to March, 2017. Surface water and sediment samples were collected from the chosen sampling stations at fortnightly intervals and analyzed as per APHA (2005) standard methods to provide base line information on the physico-chemical characteristics of these coastal biotopes. During the study period, variations observed in different water quality parameters of mangrove and beach stations respectively are as follows: pH (7.4-8.1 and 7.6-8.6), salinity in ppt (21-33 and 30-35), EC in mS/cm (32.81-51.56 and 46.88 -54.69), DO in mg/L (2.7-5.0 and 5.4-8.9), BOD in mg/L (1.14-3.68 and 0.98-2.3), total alkalinity in mg/L (112-168 and 116-184), total hardness in mg/L (3349-5463 and 4389-6204), total solids in g/L (24.5-33.7 and 26.1-34.0), TSS in g/L (0.7-3 and 0.9-3.9), total ammonia in μg/L (3.6-19.8 and 1.2-10.8), nitrite in μg/L (0.36-3.52 and 0.14-3.6), nitrate in μg/L (1.84-4.85 and 1.2-4.34), phosphate in μg/L (1.021-3.65 and 0.116-0.824). With respect to sediment quality, during the study period the ranges observed were pH (6.9-7.9 and 7.2-8.3), EC in mS/cm (3.27-3.75 and 3.27-3.68), organic carbon in % (0.33-2.93 and 0.43-2.41), available nitrogen in Kg/ha (187-796 and 245-721), available phosphorus in Kg/ha (10-93 and 5-59), available potassium in Kg/ha (410-947 and 231-889), zinc in mg/Kg (2-34 and 1-93), iron in mg/Kg (2.68-35.8 and 4.7-13.5), Boron in mg/Kg (1-4.8 and 1-4.6) and sulphur in mg/Kg (70-147 and 21-146) for the samples collected from mangrove and beach areas respectively.
